    There really is no easy, cheap way to convert one to the other. On your example, you would have to relinquish the personal, then camp out that relinquished plot and hope you are the one to beat the other campers to repurchase it as a FC house. Same thing going back to a personal.
    Your best bet is to keep your personal as a personal, and start a FC, shop around and buy a pot for that FC and keep them separated.
