problem with freelancer is that it always starts out terribly weak to the point it's barely usable and then once you master the proper set of jobs or even all jobs it becomes so overpowering there really is no point to use anything else ever.

It's not competitive, it's either not good enough or way too good

Red Mage is kind of an example of how that sort of character fails a bit. Right now red mage is amazing in all the more casual content but in high end stuff it falls behind because a chunk of it's utility is cross classed into healing and mobility instead of damage augmentation skills
so now it's stuck in the too weak or too strong syndrome. Its cool healing aspect means it will be less damage output making it less desirable than black mage for damage or they buff the damage output and now you have a black mage that can also heal and res eclipsing the current black mages role

Also, with all the limitations ffxiv has inherited from 1.x classes need to neatly fit into a role because there is no current flexibility in the system for "I can do two different roles on this one job"
