I do remember that - we're really seem to have extremly different views of what makes a good character then.
Those "backstories" actually made me dislike them even more, because all of them were so stereotypical or boring or bland...
Tell me something about your family - and what you get to hear is "I had to help in the house when I was a child!"
Tell me something about your hobbies - "I like to eat, but I know I dont look the part!" - "I like to dance!"
And then, especially bad: Your biggest wish! "I want to become the moste famous singer in Eorzea!" - "I want to be an actress!" - "I want to be a famous dancer!"

Each time I had to talk to one of them during that year, they annoyed me more, because all those "stories" were so bland - probably intentionally, to make for inoffensive characters, but hardly good ones in my book.

But thanks for sharing your reason to like them! I'm just afraid I'll never be able to understand it xD

I am fine if they will have some side activities or some small cutscenes in the future events but honestly I am getting pretty tired of them. Heck this year the "main star" of the event was not even them but that little girl and its story (at least for me). We barely talked to them at all and I am not much of a fan of the fate. The idea behind it was kinda cute but I found their dancing to be kinda all over the place (everyone was so often just dancing their race dance instead of one choregraphy). I really liked their first event and the second one was nice too but this one just felt stale.

Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

Love the event but hated the side quest. Don't ever put a quest like that in an event that's about being happy. I'm already a useless WoL who can't save people that are within Arm's Length of me.

But seriously, I've seen too much overused of death in games that it just angers me more than makes me sad. Every time an NPC is killed off in XIV, or any game, that I grew some attachment to, is a middle finger to me.

I do not want the Songbirds to completely disappear... but I also do not want them to keep highlighting Little Ladies Day. I agree that we should go back to some of the old lore of the holiday and put the songbirds on a backseat, or delegate them to some other events... I actually think being year round for a GATE event would be awesome! and maybe have them involved in other sidequests like Hildebrand or even their own chain. But there has seemed to be a lot of new passing torches, I imagine next Valentione will be run by the little sister alone or something and we may have a passing of the torch for Easter this year too.

I'd be fine if the song birds got their own event, maybe even got more members and did like... Idol graduations, but I would like for LLD to go back to it's roots.

I honestly liked the side quest more than I like the main "story".

Keep the Songbirds, but what they need is a rival band to serve as foils/drama to make the quest interesting. The way the songbirds are structured doesn't really add any conflict or provide any real decent mechanics; they need someone to play off of to make them come alive some. Have them go against the Blackbirds or something, who try to cheat and sabotage them. This event sucked because it was japanese cliche x 2, idol singers and cute ghost girls. If you are going to do this, at least add conflict to spice it up.

A rival Boyband would be hilarious. Otherwise i find that the songbird story is ..really stale.

They need to spice up the storyline. The story for them is rather dull and boring and most people run it just because its new content.

I just find it incredible some people prefer the most generic idol caricatures possible to a heartrending short story about fulfilling a ghostly child's final wish so that she can finally find the peace she deserves, bookending it with giving her living family much needed closure.

I do like the rave emotes, though.

I think if they did it the other way around, a heartrending story, that the idols refuse to perform until it's resolved, followed by the lighthearted performance to close out the event, would be a good way of doing it too.
