    Go to your start menu and search for "FFXIV.cfg" (Typically found in C:XXX/MyGames/Final Fantasy XIV, where the character data lies). Open it with a text editor. In the display settings, set ScreenMode to 0.

    That sets it to windowed. Or at least, does for me. Also allows me to interact with the start menu again, so long as I'm not touching anything from that point onward.

    I got it back to windows mode by using reset setting option but the game does not work still. I don't know what is happening since the game was working last weekend before the current game update.

    Could be caused by the recent Nvidia graphic card update or the update itself.

    My money is on the latter - I am having a similar issue with a Radeon card. I think it's just the hotfix jumbling something - it stopped from one day to the other with that being the only change. A bunch of other people already reported in in the Technical Issue forums as well, so... fingers crossed?
