Also to be taken with a grain of salt (because I can't source it), but I recall reading that the connection isn't even the same planet - Shin Ra's descendents eventually leave Spira and colonize another planet, and THAT turns out to be the setting of VII. If true, that's a slightly more tenuous connection than is usually implied when this gets brought up.

This is a fantasy universe where the mothercrystals of planets are sentient entities, presumably with their own personalities. It's entirely feasible that the natural processes of different planet's aether will behave slightly differently. Perhaps the dead aren't absorbed back into the planet as efficiently on Spira as on other planets. The overall functionality is still very similar though. Lifestream. Pyreflies. Mist. It's all the stuff of souls and the lifeblood of the planets. FFX has spheres. These are very similar to materia. Both are crystalized variations of the planet's "lifestream" and can be used to enhance the abilities of a person. Just a Mist crystalizes into Magicite in FFXII. In the end it's just variations of the same Aetherial behavior.

If it can help, the Omega reports in FFXV actually mirrors the story of the allagan datalogs from FFXIV about Omega, I guess that the appearance of it is just a reference to the FFXIV Omega instead of them beign the very same thing
