I think the idea of a Japanese style futon is to not have a raised bed, no?

Sort of, but futon are occasionally placed on raised platforms, particularly for older citizens who find them easier to get in and out of.
It would be nice just to have some more decorating possibilities. I like the idea of setting the futon on top of the hingan sideboards to give the appearance of a bed with drawers beneath it.
