I keep playing simply because I enjoy being on. Right now I only log in to do dailies for tomes, I do the weekly things, do a few hunts, then I get on when my friends do to help them craft stuff for their houses they just got or do FC things. To me it's a nice break from irl and from work.

Well, I'm not even close to being caught up, and still swimming in HW, and I've been playing for two years. Basically, I can play this game and find enjoyment completely outside the MSQ. Being Max level and Max ilv really isn't that important to me until it locks me out of goals I wish to achieve.

One day I'll get back to it, but I'm always finding something to do, and always have a long term goal set with something that keeps me busy. It could be raising another job, getting another relic, farming/crafting glamours, it's almost endless what you can do, especially if you can get into crafting and gathering.

Only having one job leveled up is what burned me out on this game when I started. After weeks of nothing but ex roulette as BLM in 3.0, I grew bored of the game and didn’t play for all of 3.1 as a result. Came back for 3.2, decided to step out and try other jobs for a change of pace, and I haven’t stopped playing since.

I've stopped doing daily roulettes altogether because of how draining it is. Instead, I cap my tomes farming the current primals for their mounts and gearing up jobs I like playing. DRG (main) - savage raids, DRK - normal raids, SAM - selfish fun. Susano and Lakshmi are done, im 50+ totems on Shinryu and Byakko each. In between that, I enjoy joking around with my FC and learning songs on the harp. None of these things have to take more than 2 hours of my day so I'm able to come and go as often as I need, and I think that's really important as to why I'm not burnt out.

I simply love the game, the art style, and most of the music. Plus The only thing it has to do to hold my attention is keep being what it is. Honestly I don't get the burn out people get with mmos or this game. Tho keep in my I'm a guy who can listen to one song on repeat for a year nonstop. - I've done this... song was called Everyday by Incognito- ( great song ) But it sounds like this isn't the game for you man.

Just to reinstate, I love a lotta things about the game....the dungeons and open world especially, but neither of those can help advance my character in anyway that I know of....which makes me sad.

I just can’t believe it took such a short time to reach this point in the game, it took me a long time to get this point in WoW and other than the PvP, this game beats WoW in many aspects.

I trying hard to find a reason to keep going, because so many good aspects of the game, but it seems a majority of it, requires me to start another class, etc...

The "you are everything" aspect is HUGE in this game. They expect you to play multiple jobs, do multiple runs of the same content and grind endgame gear more than once even with the tome limit (if you max out every week you still have enough to do a couple jobs before it gets uncapped) . If you "run" to 70 and then max out your gear for one class and don't want to do any others? You're pretty done. I won't go over it again since it's been exhaustively covered in the thread, but I will chime in to the "maybe take a break" or "maybe this isn't your game" crowd. It's all we have right now. Gear progression is limited every expansion and unless you're into non-stat increasing progression you're done as soon as you gear that one job.

Maybe do a relic weapon questline? That'll eat up a couple weeks unless you binge on light parties and even then it's just for the glamour (true endgame lol) .

Right now I am doing the ixal dailies to level all the crafters at once (5 levels or so and then switch, etc), standing around in Limsa playing final fantasy music on bard, and running in-progress mentor roulette as healer. I would say the atmosphere of the game and the community keep me hanging around. If I saw FFXIV as strictly a source of rpg progression and nothing else, I probably would have quit long ago.
