Welcome back!
So, it's been a long time since you've played. As others have stated, the best way would be to read up the patch notes. There have been a lot of changes in the past moths. But since we had a number of new/returning players in our LS, I'll share the most common questions:
- Goodbye surplus and fatigue. Yeah, you don't have to worry about "leveing too fast" anymore. It's now just as any other MMO.
- Rank? Level? We now have only one level per class. Every class has it's own independent stats.
- Leve limit. The 8 leves per day thing was abolished a few months ago. We now have a leve allowance system. Basically you get a number of (don't remember the name, let's call them points) points that you can use. 1 point = 1 leve. There's no limit on how many you can do in a day, just a limit on how many you can carry at the same time (8)
- Repairs. Gear doesn't get damaged that easily now. And if you want to repair something (via a DoH class) you only need "Dark Matter", and not an specific mat/item. You can now find repair NPCs in all camps and inside the cities (they repair up to 99%).
- Recipes. Big overhaul. I'm pretty sure that all of your gear now says "dated", that means it was created via the old recipes (where you needed a PhD in crafting to know what you were doing). The new recipes are less, but easier to do. The other difference between dated gear and current one is that you cannot attach materia to dated gear.
- Materia. You might have noticed that most of your gear has a blue bar that has been slowly filling up. That's your spiritbond with that gear, once you get it to 100% (trough fighting or crafting) you can convert the gear to materia. That materia can then be added to compatible gear to boost stats. You can find a really good explanation of the materia system here:

- Travel. You can now rent a chocobo in each city-state for 800g/hour. Also, once you join a Grand Company and do a series of quests, you have the option of buying a personal chocobo that goes faster than the rental one. You can also get a "limited time" Goobbue mount in La Noscea. And! We got arships that have near-instant travel between the three city-states. Anima still works the same.
Those are the most common ones. Notice how I didn't write anything about battle mechanics or stuff, that's because I believe the best way to learn that stuff is by doing it yourself (and I suck at explaining). So go and play a couple of days, I'm pretty sure you'll have more questions later on, so don't hesitate and come back to the thread so you can ask more specific questions.
Have fun!
