Instanced plots with a fixed price for each size tier. To be sure, there is something nice about having 'neighborhoods' to wander around it, but in my estimation, it simply hasn't been worth the cost. There are also significant architectural limits imposed by such a system; with fully instanced plots, SE could easily have allowed for larger outdoor areas or housing addition options alongside the base packages. The instanced house could also be shared more easily across one's entire account; any alt within the same data centre could probably access it.
