I'm not opposed to the idea exactly. I can see the appeal of dress up waifu bait following me around. But I'm kind of attached to my chocobo and it seems like a waste of an already sufficient system that's already in place. It was confirmed they're doing something with our chocobo right now too. Unless you want to copy and paste the existing system then whatever.

Idle thought, people would want their waifus afk'ing next to them in towns and that sounds annoying in high pop areas.

Squad members make sense but Retainers would be more flexible.

they're not going to have non-playable races because that would need animations that they have to create from scratch and that's way too expensive.

Retainers can be individualistic in looks and have a higher maximum level than squadron members but are limited to class you unlocked (and the levels of the classes). Squadron members cannot allow the WoL to have a HW/SB job (or technically any job) go with them. Some retainers are gatherers, so does a gathering WoL take their retainer with them to nodes? Sounds odd. Maybe DoW/DoM retainers only? They better serve doing ventures. Both are restricted in different ways. The only way to achieve a true humanoid companion is to have a separate thing all together.

All jokes aside, I barely use my chocobo companion at all, and I think having a fully customizable retainer-like companion would be more of an incentive for me to use it.

What kind of friend wouldn't let you play dress-up dolls with them?! That's just plain unfashionaaaabluh is what that is.

On a serious note though, overworld activity is too unappealing right now for SE to consider this. It would need a serious boost for them to consider letting us use another NPC ally. And I don't mean just incentive, I mean difficulty as well. Either that or something we can only do with said NPC. Oh wait, that's what Squadrons are doing already. So yeah, what incentive does SE have to give us this? I sure can't see any, especially since you can already play dress-up with your squadron.
