New Tank.............

I've done Howling Eye as DPS, but this will be my first run as PLD, and have heard about the " Slip Stream " ability Garuda does. My question is how to tell when she's going to do it? I know a lot of times you can tell when an enemy is getting ready to do an attack, but is this the same? I've watched videos on Howling Eye, but can't tell when the attack is being done. I really would hate to go in the first time and get the party killed, so far I've been actually surprised and proud of myself for playing a Tank this far.

Slipstream has a castbar. When you target Garuda (or her buddies), any spells or actions that charge up will appear over their health bar with a progress meter. It will literally say "Slipstream" and have a yellow bar sliding from 0% to 100%. When it hits 100% she will use it. SHe also will not turn or move during the casting, so this is when you move through her hitbox to behind her as slipstream is a cone in front of her that damage+stuns you.

Other moves like "Wicked Wheel" (circle AOE around her) do not have a cast bar and just happens at a set time. These you have to leanr the timing of yourself as all fights are tightly scripted.

After reading your comment I went in and did the Howling Eye, we did fine, BUT I did NOT see any bar over Garuda's health bar, needless to say I never moved out of the way. Maybe I'll just quit tanking.

Garuda normal mode doesn't have any cast bars. The attacks don't hit very hard and it's a pretty big pushover anyways, so you shouldn't worry about it. Extreme mode has the cast bars and other mechanics, which I presume Aana was confused with. Later on you'll see tankbuster mechanics more often, but those will almost always have a cast bar. Just keep on trucking and it'll all become second nature before you know it

Edit: It seems I was mistaken. Garuda in normal mode does cast Slipstream, but there is no castbar indicating it, however you can see her cast it on her model (she holds her wings up in the air, alongside the casting effects). If you're unsure about a new trial/dungeon/raid, I'd recommend asking if anyone can explain the mechanics at the beginning of the duty, or look up a video guide. Depending what instance they aren't long and tell you the most important things you need to know.

Slipstream always comes a few moments after Wicked Wheel. Bosses in this game are scripted, (as are just about every mob), it's only a matter of memorizing their attack order so that you can be ready for tank busters.

Whoops. I forgot there was as difference between the casting in normal vs hard vs ex mode. I haven't seen the non-ex version in quite some time. My bad.

Slipstream won't kill you. It'll just do some damage and stun you. As long as you make sure you have her faced away, you'll be fine.

As for the cast bar, you'll have to pay attention to her character model. She'll have a special stance whenever she's casting something. It's there in Extreme, but not in normal.

Don't quit tanking. Each boss has their quirks but as everyone else said they are tightly scripted. You will be fine if you stick with it.
