The Threat of Perplexity help - no ability to heal anymore?

I have tried many times and the swordsman keeps dying before I can kill everything. I have read up on it and all I can see is that using cure to heal him as a cross ability is the solution. I do not have an option to use cross skills, is this something that has been removed? Is there another way to complete this quest? Please help????

I haven't played it since they changed the cross roll actions, but sleep as I remember sleep was handy here. Keep enemies that aren't the ones you or he are attacking asleep and he'll take less damage.
