People also used it to sell specific stuff you couldn't sell at AH. Outside of Jeuno was where you bought Dynamis currency, I remember. Plus, it kind of added a shopping experience; it was more like real stores where the AH is like Amazon, less selecting goods from a list.
This just makes me miss the Rolanberry Market now.
Edit: I still remember when someone dragged Simurgh to Jeuno. The massacre was beautiful.

Only reason they did that, was to bypass the taxing on items you put up on the AH lol. Eventually they did start to add important items to their Bazaar.People also used it to sell specific stuff you couldn't sell at AH. So the v1 market system worked like this. You put things up for sale on your retainer and sent them to a ward. If you wanted to buy something, you want into the retainer ward and checked every single one individually. There was no search function, there was no identification, nothing. You simply checked each retainer separately, one at a time, to find what you were looking for.
Eventually, toward the end, they did add a search function but all it did was give you a retainer name, then you had to go in and search through the ward to find the retainer. There were so many retainers in the ward that they would blink in and out of existence so you had to move slowly both before and after.
It was an absolute nightmare.
Oh and the wards were all split between things like "weapons" "weaver items" and such. You could put anything on a retainer but you had a better chance of selling, crafting tools, for instance, if it was in the tools ward as opposed to the armor ward. A total mess.
I always get a laugh when I see listings that are all high quality, so I sneak a couple normal quality items up for sale, and the sellers selling the high quality items undercut my normal ones.
Another favorite of mine is when I get undercut, by some meager amount, and the competition is doing the undercutting from a city with a higher tax rate. Not that that matters to some buyers, but it's still comical.
