My FC got a ton of flake when the new housing area came out and the FC leader got the large up on the hill there (plot 30, I think) so that sort of thing isn't an isolated incident. I know that FC still comes over to our house and harasses people (and those wards have been out for months by now.)
Regardless, I think SE really needs to create more gold sinks. The fact that so many people not only want houses but can afford said houses that they create this sort of uproar is a testament to the lack of gold sinks in the game. Oh, if you buy everything from the MB, you'll be poor enough, but you can literally get almost everything else in the game by working for it. Even the BT mounts/minions are very cheap. Housing is really the only huge purchase that's bought from an NPC (technically) and therefore it's one of the only ways you can kinda-sorta prove you're rich. They need NPCs that sell mounts, glam, minions, etc for cold hard gil and a lot of it. WoW does do that well. There are a ton of mounts that range from affordable to the most expensive thing in the game, and they always add in new ones. So you get the multiseater mounts, the mounts with vendors, and the purely gold sink ones. The most expensive thing in that game is the spider mount, which costs like 2m gold (which would be like 500m to 750m gil when it came out.) People bought that and still ride them, regardless that it's a ground mount and they're in flying zones. xD The black market auction house is a nice feature as well. The NPC auctions stuff that are either really rare or that were taken out of the game at an earlier date and they also sell these boxes that are wonderful gold sinks -- they contain rare, rare mounts, transmog, and useless stuff. So you could end up with the rarest mount in the game or a minion worth 20k gil.
SE simply needs to give players more ways to spend gil other than housing. Make a beautiful, shiny mount that costs 750m and I can guarantee a ton of people would buy that over a house. After all, a large in the Shiro is nice and all, but they can't ride that everywhere and proclaim their wealth like a mount would do.
