    New Tank

I have NEVER ever tanked before, the other day I ran through Halatali as I'd forgotten it.
Anyway ALL of the other players evidently did NOT want to follow my lead, the dps would attack a mob before I'd finished marking the adds, was only using #1 and #2. Then even after marking they were attacking other mobs, so I stopped marking. Also they wanted to go finish the last boss before picking up the last treasure chest where the pieste ( sp) appears after stepping into the middle of the room. Well at first I was alone in that area and they were in the room of the last boss, how do I know this? the cutscene appeared and after I disabled the cutscene then they evidently came back. Not sure I want to keep playing this character. This was longer, but had to shorten it. WTH kind of forum tells you it's to long of a post?

I have ran a dungeon where I had a SAM run ahead of me and pull all the mobs.... I stopped and waited for him to die... My best friend was the healer and told him to not rez the SAM. so he didnt. after which id watch the SAM stand in an AOE and just take it. again passed the message to my Healer to not heal the SAM. If he is gonna make this dungeon hell for me then im going to make him suffer. needless to say we pretty well did the entire dungeon with one DPS myself as tank and my friend as heals. you will run into idiots your entire time on this game. but sometimes you get a really great team and everything runs smooth.

Are you using AOE abilities to gain aggro? While DPS should focus single target attacks on your primary target, it is still very important to gain some aggro on all enemies at the start of each battle. For paladin it is flash, for warrior it is overpower, etc. Tank stance also helps this a lot. This is because things like healer regen and healing spells causes aggro on all enemies (white mage in particular is problematic) and DOTs are usually applied to all enemies. Also, other players will often use AOE abilities that hit all enemies at once (and causes aggro to all equally).

Roulette players often ignore the treasure chests since the items are worthless for them and they see it as “just a waste of time”. Particularly if they are in avoidable side rooms. They don’t care if a progression player might want them.

At the start of the dungeon say or ask if you can do a ‘full clear’ (pick up all chests and kill adds in all areas).

Also, don’t bother marking adds - just keep your agro up on all.

Marking takes a lot of time, and honestly most people just want to "get it over with". Don't bother with marking except you have a macro for that.
You attack a mob, and the DPS (and healer) have to attack this certain mob. If they don't bother to change their target they chose, let them have it.

You "could be nice", and take the mob from the DPS, but this way they will never learn. Do it like Graiggy

As you are learing tank - holding aggro, taking the lead, set the pace, rotate CDs - the DPS have to learn also. Let them use diversion, they should attack your targeted mob or AoE as you AoE. You are the lead and you decide how to run the dungeon.

I also had a bard once who did a full single target burst on a mob while I was mass pulling. He did it twice and I took the mob from him. Well, and it happened a third time, and it was a big-a** gorilla with semi-tankbusters. I told my healer friend to let him die and I told bard "if he would pull aggro during a pull again, I would let him die again"... he left
And we actually got a good DPS as replacement after this. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Happy ending.

Still, try not to stretch run time too far, even through you are new. Pull as many as you are confident you (and your healer) can handle, and try to take risks by pulling even more. Make a good judgement, don't wipe the party, but try to improve. Don't stop learning tank, it's actually quite enjoyable after the first steps.

Seconded, thirded-fourthed. Marks are for raids or semi-important special trash like the Chyme of the mountain that can wreck your group if left alone. Otherwise, the time you spend doing it is time people are standing around getting bored when they'd rather be stabbing something in the face.

Personally I feel in lower level content you should simply do your best to hold aggro and if a DPS pulls for you or the rip aggro off try to get it back but if you do not do not worry. The mobs in Halatali, Sas etc. . . do not hit all that hard so other players can easily take one or two without much sorry. Do not bother to fight them group if they desire a quicker paced run. Either adjust or leave said group. While it might be rough when you run into a group that tries to speed run when you are either unwilling or not capable of doing so yet. Remember it is a group game and you are simply one part of the group, if the majority of the group desire such a run make the choice to adjust or leave but never be vindictive about it. Of course communication is key and if you tell a group before hand that you wish for a full clear or that you are new most people will be understanding.

Though same goes for a lone player that wishes to force larger pulls or tries to speed the group up. If the rest of the group is fine with a slower paced run or full clear kindly ask them to stop if they do not do let said player do their own thing until you can vote kick.

Yeah most lower level dungeons are so nerfed, they arent a threat, and tansk AoE threat is raised enough to just AoE spam, and ignore. Except WAR which cant spam its AoEs as easily lower levels.
Ive soloed Halatali as a Lv20 PLD, and soloed 2 others as ACN, so that pretty much just means the place isnt really anything to pay attention to.

Welcome to the sacred brotherhood! Prepare to die. A lot. Prepare to be yelled at for going too slow or too fast! Prepare to be blamed for everything or completely ignored! Prepare to suffer! But swallow your fear, overcome your anxiety, and thicken your hide! For after a few short weeks of newbie hell, you will be forged in the hellish fires of duty finder and be TRANSFORMED into a ruthless, vicious, wiley survivor of a hundred bad pugs. And then you will step forth and own the field of battle and all shall call you TANK, and ask you to help with their daily roulettes, when all you want is five fucking minutes to yourself so you can work on your dragoon.

    Welcome, brother!

I LOVE THIS!!! Tanking is like a brother/sister hood. ive had a dps who normally tanked explain the instance to me and made it so much more simple. You are absolutely right! other Tanks hate to see tanks fail. It is so frustrating sitting there on my WHM and seeing my tank do it all wrong. I walked a tank through a dungeon the other day. gave him pointers told him everything he needed for that dungeon. by the end he was holding aggro like a champ
