Ya gotta look at the big picture, not just what you see during the day one craze.
The big picture is the issue here.

This trend will likely not stop at the Goobbue. The dats already have what appears to be Drake and Wolf mounts, possibly to be given out in the next 2 patches. Then 2.0 hits and all the new players will see the mounts and start clamoring for new ones. This is the beginning of a precedent -- one that will make the entire world look like a carnival rather than a FF game.

Ideally, the Goobbue should be a one-off 'gift' and then all new mounts should be either: A) Rented by players for navigating terrain (ie. Drakes for volcanic areas), or B) Part of a Beastmaster Job that can tame a monster and ride it into battle.

The rental mounts concept has an added bonus. The 2.0 landscape could have several impassible terrain features (ie Lava, deep water, swamps, etc) which can lead to planned expansion areas with an empty NPC shack nearby. When they want to open the zone up, the devs just add in the mount-rental NPC and they are good to go.

It's much better than FFXI's approach of making caves appearing out of nowhere.
