Start by adding some things you can easily purchase or reaquire, to get a feel for how it works.

I've tentatively used it to set up a plate for my machinist glamour, which I'm currently leveling and was glamouring with gear I was happy to put in the dresser. It's certainly a good easy way to reapply the whole costume at once! The only disadvantage would be that I don't think you can apply glamours "in advance" so it looks right as soon as you equip it.

It's definitely a bit nerve-wracking (moreso that I'd ever expect to feel while going through inventory menus!) that you have to decide whether you're happy with not having it accessible otherwise. Right now it's a bit of a thought process for each piece.

I experimented a little and made a plate for my lowbie astrologian using only armoire items so I could try it. Once you wrap your head around the idea that it's just the old system but entire outfits done at once and with no glamour prism cost, it's not bad at all! Once they've been able to relax restrictions on where/when you can apply them, increased plate/item limits, and allowed the system to be used for squadron members, I will probably feel a lot more comfortable throwing the majority of my glamour gear in there and making sets for my casters.

Not perfect but a lot better

Sure this is not a perfect solution but it's a step in the right direction. I finally can reapply my outfit with the push of a button and don't have to get the right glamour crystal and color to use each time I get a new armor piece.

Maybe it's a bigger deal in the endgame, that I don't know yet. It works fine for me so far.

Just sucks that we can only change the plates in citys.

I knew from the very beginning it wasn't going to be anything similar to what people were expecting. I wasn't too excited for this. If there were more than 10 plates then that'd be great.

I think people's complaints about the glamour toilet are based entirely from what they wanted this system to be, and not what it actually is.

People wanted a way to have different glamour for every combat and crafting job and this doesn't give you enough plates to do that. Maybe it will someday, but right now that's not what this system does. However, it does let you cast the same glamours over and over freely, which allows you to change your glamour more often and possibly keep your glamour intact when you upgrade your gear. Also, you can glamour the entire contents of your armoire with no prisms required or anything having to be flushed into the toilet forever, so if you want to dress up in seasonal event gear for various events you can easily throw some on a plate and freely glamour it on.

It does need work, there's no good reason we can't change glamour everywhere we can change gear sets. And the 200 item limit is going to be too low, that or the inability to remove things needs to change.

It's a complicated system trying to simplify things without adding too much data load on the back end.

While I agree with the distaste for the "destroyed" items, until/unless you hit that 200 cap (before it gets boosted, hopefully within a patch or two), you don't really lose out on much. Some, granted, and if those were functions you use frequently, by all means, disregard the dresser.
But, trying to understand it from a developmental perspective, I kinda get the call for destroying the item. For example:

    1. Add any item to dresser. Copper Ring, let's say.
    2. Use Copper Ring in Plate 1
    3. Apply Plate 1 to currently equipped gear, glamouring Copper Ring onto whatever you have on
    4. Remove Copper Ring from dresser, proceed to discard/sell ring.

Now you've run into a case of trying to get rid of an item that has been glamoured. I never used the old glamour system much, so I don't know how it handles that situation, but for a system meant to streamline this making it more accessible for beginners, maybe they just wanted to avoid the hassle that would cause, assuming it wouldn't outright break things.

It's easy to be upset/frustrated with the restriction, but buried somewhere in the system, there's a logic to why it needs to be that way, surely. Unless you really just want to believe they arbitrarily decided "No, you can't have any of these items back."

Can I glamour cross class finally? There's more than a few, say, monk items that I would like to wear for a healer glamour for example. Did they unlock that with the glamour plates or is it still role restricted?

No you can't. The normal restrictions all apply as usual.

The entire system is just a flashy multi-slot glamour macro that feasts on your items.
