Its a random chance to proc, and a fairly low chance too. I can go long stretches without seeing one even with the lv 70 buffs. There is nothing you need to do to trigger them to show up.
But I mean I have gotten all of the crafting classes up to 10 already, and it has not changed from Normal once. It's supposed to be like a one in four chance of getting at least good!
The condition is always going to start Normal for Step 1. It's subsequent steps that have a random chance to be normal, good, or excellent. I'd be curious what your source is for "It's supposed to be like a one in four chance." I have no idea what the odds are myself.
It was in one of the wikis. I understand what you guys are saying that it is random, but for me to have leveled all of them to 10 and not getting a single "Good" is statistically impossible. I also never received a help pop-up about condition which I believe you are supposed to.
Granted it's been near forever, but I think the good/excellent procs won't even show up until you're level 15.
What is your crafting process? As was mentioned it always starts as normal, so if you're just going for progress only and completing the synth ASAP rather than working on quality, you're going to have a lower chance. Like, if you are able to finish the synth in 2 actions, and just do those each synth, that means only one turn of your synth was ever capable of being good/excellent at all. Also I'm fairly certain it's less than 1/4th rate.
Hm. Looks like a user named "Squand" added those percentages to the below page in 2015:
https://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/Crafting
Said user failed to add their own source, though, whether it be personal feelings, some sort of study conducted by themselves or others, or an actual statement made by the game's developers.
While the percentages do sound believable based on my own experience, I still wouldn't recommend accepting something as truth just because it's posted on a freely-editable site.
I've also been a 25+ armorer since 2011, so if the crafting system we use now (implemented in 2013) doesn't give us goods until level 15 as Mau suggests, I would have never experienced firsthand the pre-15 portion of it where he suggests it's nothing but normal condition.
Regardless of what anyone says the probability of anything is, one thing we must accept, as early as possible, is this:
If it's not 0% or 100%, there are no guarantees.
Streaks of ten failures on 90% will happen, and this is normal. Unless a 100% event fails, or a 0% event succeeds, there is no such thing as "statistically impossible".
Error 3102 Club, Order of the 52nd Hour
The rate has been adjusted by SE a few times up and then down if I recall. It is also based or was based on your gear level for a while in HW. In SB crafting, I see fewer goods and excellents but rarely when I need them crafting level 70 gear. I do see them far more often in ARR and HW crafting. Hy gear is full 320 if that helps as a reference point.
