Well, it’s that time of year again… my love. I never did get the chance to call you that, did I? Before everything happened. Before you died.

Despite the fact that three years have passed, I still think about it all the time. And though I have journeyed far from where you’re buried, separating us by both time and distance, my heart remains there with you, on that snowy cliff amongst the mountains of Coerthas.

I think of your shield cast aside, that gaping hole drilled through its crest. I think of the crimson red splashed across the tiles—your blood. I think of the setting sun, the sky darkening as your life came to an end. And I think of your parting words, and I smile… just like how you wanted me to. Some days I might have to force it, and maybe I’ll break down crying, but I’ll always smile. For your sake.

I treasured the time we had. From the moment we met, I knew that you were different. Though the rest were as cold as the falling snow outside, you were warm. You welcomed me in at my lowest, when everyone else had turned against me. You saved me. My greatest regret is that I couldn’t save you in kind. I’m supposed to be the great Warrior of Light, saviour of the realm, and I couldn’t even save the man I loved! How pathetic is that?

But I suppose this isn’t the time to wave around the scars I carry. It’s a special day, after all! It’s supposed to be happy, and joyous… yeah…

Happy Valentione’s Day, Haurchefant. I’ll keep smiling for you. And when my time in this world is up, I’ll see you again. Please wait for me…

My Dearest Lord Commander,

I have harbored such emotions concerning the state of our friendship for some time. Even now as I pen this, my hand quivers. I often think back to the many moments I’ve been blessed to reside in your presence, how Ishgard has become like a second home to me. I wouldn’t be complete without the de Fortemps, Lucia, Handeloup, or Estinien. But most of all, I wouldn’t be complete without your example in my life. I know many look to me for inspiration and guidance, but you, Aymeric, are my inspiration. The way you carry yourself, the way you tirelessly labor for those you love, I flush just thinking on it. Your bravery is what carried your homeland to victory and peace. It wouldn’t be Ishgard without you.
I realize our relationship has been purely professional up to this point, but I wish to confess a truth to you. Ever since we enjoyed such a lovely meal together, laughing and taking a moment’s respite from our labors, I’ve craved more of you. I never realized just how much until you looked euphoric at the thought of wandering the expanses of the realm by my side. I’ve carried that image of your smile to this very day. I know your obligations are many, but please, I beg you, from the bottom of my heart, pray consider this offer. I know I am small in stature compared to your impressive height, but what I lack in size I can make up for in compassion. I love you, Aymeric, and I couldn’t imagine life without you.

My Sun,

I only know as much about your people as you have deigned to tell me. Like you, I was born with the scales of the Xaela, but unlike you I know not from where I came. There is no tribe to claim me; my true name is unknown to me, I have always just been what the locals have called me. You know me as Grand Jellyfish, but that is simply a name a Roegadyn I met gave to me when I had yet to grow into my horns. He said I was as Grand as a Jellyfish, and it stuck.

But what does this have to do with you? Magnai, my Sun, I feel as though.. I am your Moon. Many years ago, before I can remember, I know I must have been a part of the Azim Steppe. So I may be your Nhaama.. I see my Azim in your eyes. But I cannot tell you this in person, for I am not as good with words as I am with a lyre or the written word. When you tried to determine whether Cirina might be your Moon, my heart cried out in protest, but I could not tell you then.

I should not tell you now. For I have my own path to tread, and you have yours. Mine is a solitary road. Unless you are willing to travel with me, but I know you have your people to consider. So I know we should not be one.

A mutual friend once asked me what I wanted, not what was expected of me or what needed to be done, but what I wanted. I never got to tell him the answer, and at the time I wasn't sure. Since that day I've thought about what I wanted, and I finally have an answer. I want you. I want you and I wish I had realized it before it was too late.

I loved you, Haurchefant, ever since the moment I realized you cared more about my wellbeing than I did. I was a fool for biting my tongue all those long nights in our very own Falling Snows, saying thank you instead of confessing my true feelings when you'd hand me a fresh mug of hot cocoa after watching me train alongside your men. As I listen to your words of the Echo, and what they mean, then I start pondering what I would do with such a power. Could I even possibly wield the Echo even though I faint every time I strain. Is there a power beyond what comprehension the Echo could lie? I say, "The Echo is blue". But that is not true. . . My echo is white. The color of the Echo could signify that the Echo within my character is resounding it within Minfilia's heart. I should have known. I am in love you with Minfilia. Yeah. . . Uh, so if my character had wiser words than this. . . "I love you!" with resounding compassion, and IF it were enough to rescue you from sure oblivion, then I would gladly do so. The only limitation that I would ponder about when you come to mind, would be that you are stuck behind that desk. The Scions of the Seventh Dawn, would be more than welcome to anything if they required it of me. I commend you for the best enjoyment a man behind never ending duties can have. . . To ... the one who awakened me,
You told me to live.
Is it pathetic that such a tiny thing sparked something in me?
You urged me to continue thriving, to claw my way through life, and in doing so, gave me drive.
I’m no good at poetics, I’ve never been.
Neither am I good at timing.
Clearly.
But there’s something in me that’s been set aflame and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it from the moment we spoke.
You called me a beast, similar to you, and for a long time, I refused to believe that was true. We were of different breeds, set on different paths. But I considered. I thought and pondered until my head hurt and I feared I began to see your point. After all, I’ve done worse with these claws than others have with knives, I’m sure.
Self-preservation, opportunistic endeavors, duty. There comes a point where those all blend into the same definition, right?
But after you called to me, something changed.
My fangs ached with some urge repressed by both name and duty. But was sharp, it was burning, it boiled at the pit of my stomach and now it’s something that’s taken a hold of me.
Alas, I may have come to that realization too late.

It has been far too long since we have last seen each other old friend. I look back on our journey together and get flooded with memories of melancholic bliss. I remember the first time we met each other’s gaze when we were bitter enemies, fighting for our own ideals. As time passed however, our goals slowly converged into what is now an everlasting friendship. The memories we have made during our journey are some of my fondest. Whenever I gaze up to the stars, I reminisce the night we spent around the fire in the Churning Mists. Whenever I see a moogle, I will always recall the day you first encountered them and how your beautiful face lit up at the sight of one. I then remember your recklessness and how you saved us from Garlean gunfire…

To this day, I regret I could not do anything more to prevent your sacrifice. Often, I return to Azys Lla to gaze upon the ice you left behind on the Garlean airship. The ice that still chills my aching heart. I wish I was stronger, I wish I could do more to protect the ones that I love…

Alas, what’s done is done and all I can do now is look forward and fight for a better future. I know that this letter won’t reach you physically, but know that with each passing day, I think of you, my precious Iceheart. I hope to see you again soon.
