Returning player trying to save for a house.

Hi, I'm a returning player and currently have a level 70 DRK as my main. In the next few weeks we will have access to new plots for housing and I'm looking to save up for when this happens. Currently I'm only at 1.3m GIL but I do have infinite time on my hands basically.

I've been off and on with this game for years and have finally came back with lots of free time and am looking for a good way to do this because I'm totally lost. I started leveling miner, but looking on the market board, it looks like high level ores are only selling for like 500gil each? I have no idea what to do or where to start! Any help would be greatly appreciated!~~

Simplest things. Not the fastest money makers tho would be

Making sure to do retainer ventures. Quick exploration frequently brings junk but sometimes your retainer comes back with something worth a few hundred K

Selling grade 6 materia. Do this by either farming clusters/crystals and exchanging them or they actually drop randomly in expert roulette duties. If you are farming duties you can burn all those extra tomestones on crafting materials. The key thing though when doing this is to not flood the market

Find a group and do some lv 70 treasure maps. Most tend to go with map owner rolls need on rollable drops but there's a lot of basic drops that auto distribute and bonus look if you open a portal. I decent night of treasure maps might take you a few days to sell off everything if you only have 2 retainers

Gathering anything except for the absolute highest level, high quality materials (usually the ones locked behind folklore books) will not net you large chunks of change in one go. There are a few lower level materials you can gather which won't sell for excessive amounts but are used quite a bit so they sell at a low, but very consistent rate; alumen comes to mind as an example, but it will vary by server. Similarly, crafting won't make you much in large lump sums unless you are making the highest, endgame level stuff or very sought-after glamour pieces. The market for housing furnishings can also be lucrative, depending on the server. If you aren't willing to invest a lot of time in it (both leveling and stalking the MB to know what to sell and when,) I wouldn't bother. Ritsuko gave some good ideas about non-gather/crafter ways to make money.

Some items that are actually rather simple to make can fetch unusually high prices due to lack of supply.

Look around at the sale history of items with little to no stock and see how much people are buying them for, and you might be able to find yourself a non-competitive market to take advantage of.

Do all your roulette's every day. Seriously at 70 it adds up to a nice chunk of change. Do your challenge log as well, because most of those provide a /lot/ of money over time as well.

Learn the value of reselling as well as gathering, though if you don't have gathering leveled yet the former is your best bet in the immediate future. You'd be surprised how laziness prompts people to buy items from the market board at nearly ten times the value you bought it for; case in point I put up a Glade Flooring today for 70k as a joke because there was only one other seller available and they were pricing it at much higher. I figured I'd help prompt an eventual market crash and had only the faintest of thoughts that it'd actually sell. Except it did not even ten minutes later. For clarification you can /buy/ that item at the Housing Merchant in every residential ward for /5k/. I've been able to sell other things like /Honey/ for similar mark ups by watching the market and made around 500k before people caught on and crashed it into oblivion. You'd be surprised how little people care to check out of the way vendors or level the ARR beast tribes whose components generally sell well even today. If you pay attention to the marketboard and invest just a little bit, it can pay off in big ways.

Also remember to run instances for items that can't be gotten elsewhere. Stuff like rare crafting items and even minions that only come from /one/ dungeon can sell for a lot depending upon the world you happen to be on. Same thing with your retainers. Send them out every day and sometimes they'll come back with something amazing for you at the higher levels.

I notice you have a 61 paladin job. Leveling this job to 70 on daily duties and dungeons is going to make you a lot of bonus Gil. if you have not finished the MSQ I suggest using your other class for that and level the tank just on these things.

You can get enough gil by selling the materia you get by doing leveling roulettes as an adventurer in need (so tank). Bear in mind though that Free Companies with 4 or more people get housing first and there is no date on when private owners get to start buying the new houses.

This, however they /are/ looking into expanding apartments so even if you can't get a house I wouldn't despair as you'll have more time to save for that.

As other have said, Cracked Clusters into Materia VI should see an increase in price in 4.2, as people get new gear.
