Here's the reason that doesn't work in FFXIV. Your heals do a lot more than in most other games relative to the damage tanks receive. You have down time and other skills at your disposal. Same can be said for any class.

Even if a tank has agro on every mob pulled, if all he/she is doing is spamming their taunts, they are not doing what the class was designed to do. Same goes for healers.

These people sound like they were rude, and that is not warranted. You should be healing, dpsing, and managing your mana though.

Have you casted Regen on the Tank as well as anyone else? Regen helps a lot with healing over time so you do not have to heal as much. Healing was way trickier for me before 4.0 because you had to constantly switch between Cleric Stance for damaging and then taking it off for healing.

EDIT: I'm autistic, so I learn at a different pace. Yet I actually adapted pretty well for every job. I'm just at home more playing NIN. After running Titan EX as WHM, I got the hang of it pretty quickly. ALWAYS keep Regen up on your party members.

I could tank dungeons for you while you level, if that would change your mind about quitting. Whether you do damage or not doesn't matter to me. Most healers will reach a point where they feel bored during combat and that's the time to start doing dps. There is no point in nagging at new healers until they reach that stage of comfort.

Let me know in this thread if you're interested and I'll contact you in game.

Outside of the realm of foul and crass language aimed at the OP, if you were being called out, I'm sorry to say that they were right. Since OP is new to the game, I don't blame him/her. It's a different game design, very dps oriented despite roles assigned outside of that so I can understand being completely thrown off by it.

I assume by the time OP gets to this page, they are aware of how things should work and ask themselves if they can try to adjust to this and hopefully get better feedback this time around or give up and play another game that suits their healing preferences.

If you're capable of healing DRK back in ShB (or any tanks), then you'll heal EW DRK just fine.

you do not heal that often in this game, leads to a lot of downtime, so your expected to help dps otherwise it appears you are not doing much. never really seen off the wall harassment of lacking dps as a healer.

As a healer in this game you're encouraged to at least keep a constant rotation of your dots if you aren't comfortable DPSing otherwise. There's a lot of downtime for most fights, particularly at your currently level, and this helps the party clear content faster without sacrificing your ability to heal. It's not until 57 where you're actually going to be severely tested and the dungeons are going to start having more healer checks going forward. At the very least as a WHM I would encourage you to filter Holy into your rotation as it's stun affect /helps/ with healing and is a godsend in later fights where the damage and enemies are amped up. It's essentially your 'take a moment and breathe' button that can make or break some pulls.

I am sorry that people harassed you over this though... ):

    5 simple words:

    "You don't pay my sub."

For real, if they don't like how you're playing then tell them they are free to vote kick. 95% of the time they'll shut up and act like nothing happened. If they don't, stop healing them. Let them die and don't rez.

Don't be a floor mat for these schmucks.

    Best of luck,

I'm used to more traditional healing model - me, a healer, just heal. From the garbage thrown my way I gathered I'm supposed to dps too. Apparently for most people I healed too little, dps'd too little, then healed too little, then dps'd too little... you get the idea. I admit, I'm a slow learner, and learning how to juggle healing, dps and buffs (I decided to focus on astrologian) is tough for me, since I don't get a lot of time to play in general.
For better or worse, healers are expected to do some damage as well in XIV. I would say if you're not comfortable doing that quite yet, maybe just give a quick head's up to the party letting them know that you're still learning the ropes and will try to DPS if/when you feel you can. People seem far more understanding when you let them know upfront.

Also, not to discourage you from AST (it IS a fun job), but you may also want to try one of the other healers - see if that works out better for you. Obviously the goal is the same between the 3 healers, keep everyone alive, but they do all play slightly different, and perhaps one play-style will suit you more.

I've been a WHM main since launch, and I recently set out to level all of my healers to 70. SCH I struggled a bit with at first, but I actually started feeling comfortable and actually enjoying it towards the end of my run. AST - I was a hot mess as AST. I had caused more party wipes during those few weeks of leveling than I'd like to admit. Despite being a healer for yeaaaars, something just shuts off in my brain when playing AST.

Best luck on the next adventure ~

Ouch, being new myself I had the other kindof experience where people don't believe I'm new. Even on my war where I swear I have no idea what I'm doing people have been decent atleast. And I used both jump potions.. one on monk and story potion. Tho I started out as a dps and then tried war tanking, I haven't touched healing cause.. buck that. Maybe later, but I'm sorry you went thur that. I would say if you're still there try a dps class? Either that or reach out to people on the forums, see if they can help you. It might work out.
