Personally I liked the ARR story once you hit 50 and Coil was amazing but when HW came out it got really dull and I couldn't get through it fast enough. SB I think picked up again and made the story interesting.

But honestly I think a lot of the HW blah for me was as a legacy I had waited years to get into Ishgard so it was a disappointment from launch of HW since Ishgard turned out to be a den of dullness. HW had its moments, but about 90% of it was boooring imo. Even the side stuff like Beast Tribes and Alexander were a snooze. That's why I stopped doing endgame.

What you need to consider is SE wanted a player to level cap a job so they had to add all kinds of filler. Hence the story isn't as epic til you hit lvl cap. They could have done more if they had a minimum of a 5 year development cycle like other games, but they really had to rush to complete ARR. So I blame that myself.

Part of the problem is that much of the 2.0-2.3 game is really the story of the player character. How he/she grows from an unknown adventurer into the Warrior of Light.
So most of it is spent doing various random tasks while your reputation grows just like any up-and-coming adventurer would.
This means that there isn't really any obvious story-line connecting the early parts of the game - which makes some parts of it feel like filler to some people, even though nothing of it is actually pointless.

Starting with patch 2.3 (after we first start looking for "Lady Iceheart") and onwards into Heavensward the story becomes more focused. The story is no longer about you as such, but about the ending of the Dragonsong War.

Starting with patch 3.4 and continuing with Stormblood the story shifts to the liberation of Ala Mhigo and Doma. Again a more focused story.

Weaved in throughout all of this and acting as an overall story arc are the Ascians and their plots. They come to the foreground now and then, but mostly stay hidden in the background to the point that one sometimes nearly forget about them - until next time they show up.

And is the Palace of the Dead a more traditional "enter, explore, collect fat loot" type of DG or does it has it's own thing outside of being proceduraly generated?
I hate to go off topic, but who told you the xiv community was toxic?
