They went with your first idea. Duplicate items with different gems. Can't fault them, but would've been nice to remove that clutter, too.

I instantly went and transmuted all mine to marginally more useful materia. Freed up more retainer space than the glamour dresser for me.

Yeah, realized that and it's like why? Can't even consider having them for cosmetic reasons as the differences are pretty hard to see especially with the hand gear.

I def think ill hold onto them... Did one better and cleared out MB too. I think those being technically discontinued will be pretty neat in the future... Not like other materia will be of much relief either -can almost guarantee blue or green materia by transmutation now - prices will collapse

Are they truly gone? I just converted gear and got an ice materia. It seems there are still ways to get elemental materia.

Possibly old gear? Since there is a possibility that the materia you obtain is decided the moment you get the gear and not when you choose to convert it.

Yes it was old gear, so that could be it. If so, it seems that this may be a glitch that wasn't expected. Ended up with an Ice IV materia that I then proceeded to simply sell to a vendor for the gil. I may see this more as I kept my 60 gear for leveling other classes and moving it to them, then converting when I am above a level where I need it again or my retainer could use it.

Shoulda have hoarded it, who knows if one day it might become a highly coverted item because of its new-found rarity!
