Do tank need low ping to play properly as tank?

I ask this because my friend has been itching to play FF14 and he love the DK look (after i keep spamming “this is good time to play FF14” promotion talk)

Problem is he always has roughly 200-250ms when playing mmorpg, wow, BnS, BDO, GW2, all these mmo he play, he stuck between 200-300ms and undoubtedly FF14 will have more or less same result.

I never play as tank so i cant give him any proper explanation aside from “Just spam aoe emmity and emmity combo and you should be fine... i think”

    Anyone can share their experience?

It won't be nearly as bad as in any of those games. It will be annoying, without a doubt, but still possible at 250 ms.

I ran with an Aussie MT for a while who was consistently at 250+ ms ping, but very, very few wipes or deaths were ever his fault, let alone his ping's.

Ff14 has a very long gcd and possède à queuing system so it won't affect him that much in this regard.

However ff14 also take some time for buff or movement to be registered compared to game like wow so you should warn him about that, what you see on screen is often different than what the server "see"
Being someone who used to move at the very last second, I stopped doing so in this game because of this. (basically the default game, even with 10ms feels laggy)
However I did play one year from Japan and spare Susanno whirlpool I had no issue. (and I had 500ms+)

I often tank dungeons and raids and I'm at 180-200ms, which is well playable.

I play at around 180-200ms while using battleping/wtfast I would say it is playable just fine though you would need to adjust some things like running out of puddle of poop earlier rather than later, if you play a tank such as a warrior you might not be able to squeeze in the 9gcd's that is required in a berserk / IR window, so you might lose a gcd or two, you can compensate for this by melding more SKS instead of DH. I play a WAR and have done all the content including savage of course and it is doable, you will just need to adjust your playstyle and work with what you have.

This will be the case in all multiplayer games, lower latency is always better always.

The main problem will be in avoiding AOEs. With latency that high he will need really good reflexes to be able to get out of them in time.
Other than that there I wouldn't expect any major problems.

Tq all, i just told him what you all post.

Yes avoiding aoe is one of his major problem, he ask if there is a dodge mechanic that really require you to absolutely dodge enemy attack or else its 1 hit kill. I dont remember any though, major damage maybe... but iam a dps so for tank its probably not exactly a huge damage hit.

Depends on the ping, 250 isn't too bad but if it jumps up to 300 or even 500 depending on the content it could be fatal or healers will really hate him.

In general casual content he should be fine

Remember when 200 ms ping was considered exceptional, even in area fps games like quake 3? :P
