I realize it may not matter now, but I like to have good stats on weapons like this. However, I may have messed up. I went Critical Hit+44 and Direct Hit Rate+31, but DHR appeared in red when I went to confirm the upgrade. Did I waste stats? Would I put in Determination or Skill Speed if I did?

It wont let you add stats to something that's already maxed. so...no...not likely.

Honestly don't worry too much about it, you can reset your stats and these weapons are purely for glamour now, unless it is completely done you can get better gear with tomes and even if it is done it will be worthless after lvl 55.

Do it for the achievement and just throw any old materia on it for a quick finish imo

Not sure what you mean by "wasting stats". If you've put a total of 75 materia into the Novus weapon (which should be the case, if you're at +44 crit/+31 direct hit), you've simply hit the point where you've completed this step, and can move to the next one.
