I'd support this in some form. Possibly not all the way back to "never offended" status, but back down to "first offense" instead of "you're getting nailed to the wall if we hear from you again."

People do learn over time and if they were dumb 3 years ago and got into lots of issues, a minor infraction after 3 years of being clean doesn't deserve the firing squad. It deserves a minor offense and a warning not to backslide.

It's not that difficult to not be a dick... takes more energy to type something rude/vulgar/hostile than to not type anything at all

I'm going to side with the players against this idea for several reasons, primary of which is simply use of profanity is against the terms of service for Final Fantasy XIV. That's really the end of the story. Yes, there is a filter in place, however that filter does not give players license to use whatever language they choose in public channels. There are instances in which you can likely type as you'd like (see: linkshells in which you know all of the players, free companies in which you know other members won't report you), but in /say, /shout, /party, and /alliance you are expected to adhere to the terms set forth in the initial agreement when you started playing the game.

I know it may be difficult to not be able to use your favorite four letter word as a modifier, but you could always expand your vocabulary and find better ways to express your excitement or disappointment. When you're speaking in public, you need to keep things civil, and speak in a manner the average person would be okay with saying in front of a young person.

Yep, my approach is this, when it comes to the "public channels" (E.G. /say, /shout, etc) I treat it as speak like you would talk to your best friend, in front of your hyper strict grandmother.

As I'm sure you are well aware, it takes more than one person to be able to kick a player from a duty, so in all those instances there were at least two people agreeing they'd be better off without you tanking.

If a person has been pulled up three times then it begs the question on why that person keeps doing something that technically they shouldn't have done once, let alone three times. In a lot of places in the real world you would get kicked out for similar conduct by just doing it once.

Learn the rules and keep to them. It is not rocket science. A vast majority of players manage to get buy without ever getting reported once.

I feel like the only reason some people leave the filter off is so that they'll have easier access to flimsy excuses they can use for reporting somebody.

SE's policy just comes across as extremely alien to me, because every other mainsteam MMO I played protected people who casually used language some might find offensive strictly because a filter existed.

I think a lot of people don't even realize that rule exists with how many people I've seen casually tossing around censored swears in groups or even NN at times. Or maybe they do, but just function under the assumption most people aren't petty enough to report them for it.

I have opposite experience. Companies ban profanity and filter is to protect those that don't want to see it. But, you will still get in trouble if caught.
