I don't think this is the case as a normie like me was confused by the bait-and-switch the ruins in the Hinterlands became. That IS Sharlayan, but so is the homeland city that all Sharlayan people (save Matoya) migrated back to since Eorzea-Sharlayan saw the Garleans coming.

And Eorzea-Sharlayan was as much part of Eorzean trade and culture as Pre-Garlean Ala Mhigo had been before Sharlayan turned tail and ran when the Garleans told them diplomacy was never an option. (Which turned out to be kinda a big deal and made the precident on how Garleans deal with outsiders to Eorzea.)

There was nothing that I saw indicating Sharlayan referred to at least two entirely different places until HW. I likely just missed a few lines at some point, but I was pretty miffed to land in a dead city when the place had been talked up as hard as Ala Mhigo had.

But, wait, no, this WAS Sharlayan, but not the Sharlayan we came from, oh no.

So the Sharlayan ruins we went to in the Hinterlands were part of a colony area of the city-state abandoned when they saw the Garleans invade Ala Mhigo and went "nope, we're outta here".


Where they came back to was this Sharlayan.



That's the Sharlayan nation proper, and yes, it does say "Old Sharlayan" because that what it was compared to the Hinterlands colony. Whenever anyone mentions Sharlayan, that's usually what they're referring to unless they're pointing out something specific from the Hinterlands.

Actually it can be called Sharlayan now as new Sharlayan is Idyllshire now.
