Well given that Mysidia is traditionally a city renowned for its wealth of knowledge and governed by spellcasters....that doesn't sound like someplace in Sharlayan; that sounds like a place that is Sharlayan. Whenever we go to Sharlayan, I suspect someone will call some portion of it Mysidia.

Well Sharlayan is an archipelago of three islands so I think it might be possible for Mysidia to be a city somewhere there. Provided it still exists.

On the other hand I really am curious what Yoshi-P could do with the challenge of setting an entire expansion in one city. And Mysidia would be perfect for that as 1) it is an iconic location and 2) as a magic city it could have entire districts infested by voidsent or anything.

In term of urban planning: docks, normal city, slums, wealthy district, park, cemetery, sewers
    That's seven zones already there.

Sharlayan seems to refer to both the currently three islands that make up the nation as well as the city of the major island. And yeah, Mysidia could also be something Sharlayan was built on as well as bearing the possibility of it being an existing place somewhere on those three islands.

Also, as the previous ones have proven, expansions usually aren't set in just one city, but rather two nations. If anything, I suspect it'd be more like how Kugane is treated, being the secondary big city next to Radz-at-Han or wherever else that expansion would take us.

I know. That's why I said it would be a challenge. Also frankly there never was a proper city state we could completely explore. I know it is a good thing I'm not on the dev team but I'm curious how they would tackle seamingly bad ideas. To be fair Witcher was set exclusively in Vizima and it was fantastic.

Well, Kugane being the new city-state over Ala Mhigo was a genuine surprise. It's not even in Doma.

If Meracydia isn't supposed to be Mysidia directly, then it could instead act as a modern civilization found in the area. Azys Lla lore points that Meracydia was particularly difficult for the Allagans, especially when it's implied most other societies were basically steamrolled away, but that they eventually did take it over.

On another note, I find that for a society that epitomizes the concept of the ivory tower, it's implied that the "Sharlayan" people named their islands "Sharlayan," main homeland city "Sharlayan," and colony turned city-state "Sharlayan." Was this confusing mess of a naming convention meant to further push outsiders out, or was it just a failure of human language?

Well the planet of Azeroth has the contient of Azeroth and on it the kingdom of Azeroth. So yes, humans are lazy when naming places.

Actually WoW only uses that name for the planet. No continent or kingdom shares the name.

Back to FFXIV though, given the Sharlayan tradition of restricting nearly all knowledge from there, it may be possible that Sharlayan is identified as a city, an island and a nation of islands because of how little everyone outside the place knows of it. Actually, given how hellbent they can be about hiding their info away, they might probably hide enough of it from their own citizens.

Actually no. It is not only the planet. Only the other places have alternate names. Like for example Eastern Kingdoms. It was obviously not named as such when nobody knew that Kalimdor existed west from them.

Regarding Sharlayan you are absolutely right. I mean when Leveva wanted to spread sharlayan astrology they dressed up several girls as Leveva and left them bound and gagged on the streets of Limsa Lominsa to cover the escape of the kidnappers of the real Leveva. They do positively insane things to protect their knowledge.

It would be very interesting. The question is how they would implement it. Considering 5.0 is the fight with the empire and I doubt that 5.x will be able to cover the entire fight with the empire and eventually bleed over into 6.0.

I would rather Mysidia show up as a full expansion, especially with its lore of mages. I would even be satisfied if they slowly unlocked the region every .5 patch
