    PvP Newbie

I am interested in doing PvP, but am not sure how to start doing it. I tried one of the big matches with my WHM, (3 sides with 8 people each I think) and it was really messy and I dont think I was very helpful. Should I be playing a DPS or Tank class? Should I wait til 70 to start doing it? Which modes are the best for newbies? Is there a place where I can go to configure my pvp hotbar beforehand? I thought I would ask here before I randomly ruin any more PvP matches lol

    Thanks!

Wolves' Den Pier is where you can test your jobs for pvp and config pvp hotbars. Try out some there, read the tooltips because they differ from pve actions, and find out which job you prefer. Don't need to wait for 70. Just the lv30 to unlock pvp is as ready as you'll ever be. Your equipment stats don't count in pvp and all your buttons are unlocked from the start. Best mode to practice is whichever has shortest queue I guess because probably won't have luxury of getting to pick. People tend to gravitate to the newest modes.

You're welcome. Well the modes are...

Feast = defeat players and collect the medals they drop. Win by gaining enough medals or having more than the other team when the match time end.

Secure = stand inside bases to capture them, ticking points over time for your team. defeat interceptor drones in the center for more points.

Seize = watch map to see which tomeliths activate. interact with tomelith to capture for your team, ticking points over time until its data is fully drained. defeat enemy teams to take some of their data.

Shatter = watch map for ice tomeliths, attack them to recover data. also has bases to stand inside to capture, and KOing other players as 3 ways to score.

Astragalos = collect CE by interacting with fuel tanks or the generator in center, or defeating mammets. spend CE at base on warmachina to get advantage. Destroy enemy towers to expose their core, destroy that to win. Or whichever team did most dmg to structures when time expires will win.

Any frontline (Secure, Shatter, Seize) mode is probably best way to get into PvP. There is Rival Wings too, but imo, that mode plays very different than what one would expect because of the mechs and the mammets (it's moba FFxiv style). But Rival Wings is the most popular mode right now, and it should at least give you a decent introduction to PvP. The other modes, depending on time of day, will have longer queue times.

If you get a normal match (that is 72 players in frontline and 48 in astrolagos) then playing healer is ok for newbs I'd say, but if you get a small pop of 24 players (1 alliance pr team in frontline), it's smart to let them know you are new. That's true in any case, but it's much more noticeable in small teams.

You don't have to be 70, but you should prepare. It's easier to practice DPS. In wolves den's pier there are striking dummies you can use. They are somewhat useful for tanks too, but to train as a healer the only thing you can do is study your skills and get into games. Duelling in wolves den is also helpful for any job as training, if you can find someone to duel that is.

As a healer, if the your enemies plays smart, you'll often play as a healing tank in PvP. If party management was a Job role, that would apply most to healers.

In general, PvP is naturally more chaotic than PvE, as you are actually playing against other people, with agency, not predictable scripts. Being proactive is much more important, at least when playing as healer. There are too many healers out there that simply reacts, and forgets to be proactive.

Thank you for the breakdown of the modes Rufalus! That is really useful. And Guess, thanks for the healer specific info! I had gotten the initial impression that healers were not suited for pvp, and that I should be playing machinist or something. I bet I can get my FC mates to duel with me

Healers have most important role in pvp. Your party is in huge disadvantage if you have no healer.
