The MacOSX client for ffxiv is terrible.

Simply put this client is a sad piece of work. Despite using not many resources it still has abysmal performance. I have tested it on multiple hardware, from low end to high end and my fps was between 9 and 25 max on all of them. Not only that but the game looks and runs better inside a VM assuming your CPU can handle it.

It is NOT ok to be charging people for this junk, below 30 fps is barely playable let alone under that. Since when is it okay to charge people fro a cruddy wine wrapper anyways? Wine is free software. Even as a wine wrapper it could be so much better. People on Linux are out performing this port by a landslide, I am talking 60-100+ fps.
What will it take to get a proper port from SE?

The amount of people playing FFXIV on Mac is likely too low for SE to consider any kind of overhaul to be worthwhile. It's unfortunate that you're in this situation, but you might have to bite the bullet and make the switch to Windows or buy a PS4.

I have noticed the low fps too and have resorted to running the game at 1600 by 900 resolution at full screen with no shadows in order to get my fps up. But, I thought this low fps was due to my Mac itself and not the client.

I don't like the idea of having to drop that kind of money just to play this one game at a higher frame rate. Much cheaper to simply run the game at a slightly lower resolution and get rid of the shadows. They cause a large amount of reduction in your fps.

What was your high end hardware? Did it actually meet the specifications or was it "a 2017 macbook air" that costs $2200 but still has an integrated GPU?

For reference, the only Mac's officially supported are the iMacs. the macbooks are not officially supported.

Thanks for the info. I have a Bootcamped Mini. I also have a decent PC and a PS4. The Mini is my "last resort" option.

In current year not top shelf stuff but still should have been more than enough.

    AMD Radeon M295X GPU
    i7 clocked 4.0ghz and I believe 8gb of ram.

The difference in performance was more or less negligible inbetween macs.

If they at least used wine-staging and its tweaks we would see a big performance increase.
I think aqua utilizes my GPU better than this port.

They're not even using an up to date version of wine though. They used TransGaming's Cider, which was an old forked version of wine before many of the really nice fixes came along. Advanced users are really better off getting the PC copy of FFXIV and using a more up to date version of wine themselves, whether on macOS or on a Linux partition.

In my experiments ffxiv HW/Sb refuses to work under wine on either mac osx or even FreeBSD

I don't think patching works, but it should launch fine using the official launcher or one of the third party ones. I haven't tested using DX11 mode, but DX9 mode should be OK. Last time I did, there were a handful of winetricks also needed to get everything working correctly. I'm not sure if that's still the case on more recent versions.
