Maybe it's just me but even though the game doesn"t specifically say "do x damage or you die" I have always tried to do as much damage as possible. It just doesn't feel right to learn abilities and then not try to understand the purpose intended for it. What I mean is that I read the description of every new ability and thwn i try to maximize my rotation with the information I am given.

This has nothing to with the game telling me to do it. I want to because I want to kill things as fast and effectively as I can. I do the same in any game I play so I see no difference here.

Just tossing another +1 out there that y'all mentioning the absurd nature of rotational changes and jobs being generally incomplete until lv60+ are spot on as well.

Not exactly related, but this did remind me of another thing that really annoys me - solo instances, for both story and job quests, bestow some pretty potent Echo if you fail them a couple times.

Like, why does the lv70 DRG quest even have a mechanic if you can just fail your way to victory and never have to learn anything?
And why is the game waiting until lv70 to remind you that DRGs have an enmity dump ability...

EXACTLY! Mind you, I hit 70 within the first week of SB, so didn't have the gears we do now...so I wasn't able to complete it(I am definitely nowhere near one of the best DRGs out there, but I have been able to hold my own)

I'm a pretty solid DRG, but I wasn't really paying too much attention and missed the cue to Elusive Jump. So I died. No biggie, restart, get to that point again, Elusive Jump, go back to not really paying attention while doing my rotation. See the message to stand next to an NPC to get some heals, didn't bother confirming the name and stood next to the friendly combat NPC that has a name plate... and I die. Oh. It's the little unmarked NPC hanging out in the back? Okay. Start round 3... oh I have Echo now? That's insulting funny.

Probably like you I was rocking a mixture of i270 Augmented Shire and the couple drops I got from dungeons along the way. Some people towards the end of this expansion are going to roll in there with ~i360 gear, or next expansion with vendorable i385 gear, and curbstomp this thing without seeing any of those details. How does that help them improve or gauge their own progression, Square?

They added dummies to gauge dps already. Are they like being in a real battle, no... but they will give you an idea if you are doing your dps rotations correctly. Beyond that, learn to dodge while maximizing your up-time.
    This isn't rocket science.

How though? If you mean SSS, it's that same vagueness we feel could be fixed. You beat it or you don't.

Everyone loves a bit of clickbait for yet another parser thread. And don't even try to wave it as being the opposite of a parser, lol, literally all you're asking for is an ingame parser that uses symbols instead of numbers...

May as well show the numbers at that point if it's a personal thing, right?

Hey guys, so I'm pretty new to XIV and MMOs in general. I'm trying really hard to learn my role without letting down random teams found in the Duty Finder, I was just wondering if there was a glossary or something for some of these terms, I did a quick search and found nothing explaining anything more than the bare basics (DPS, Tank, AoE, etc).
I keep reading up on here only to get tripped up on words or phrases I feel I should know.
For example, OP mentions 'DPS Checks', and 'Rotations', and no doubt I'm only going to find more and more of them.

Please forgive my ignorance, I really want to learn how to be a contributing member of the Duty Finder.
    Thanks in advance

Dont put teh fault on the Dev too much, there is internet, whith a bunch of guide for classes,if anyone put just a bit of though in his performance,he would just go look for a guide and hit a trial or savage doll to gauge himself.

For me,the people who dont go watch a guide or anything, are just people who dont give a damn about their performance, and would so,not follow the in game guide .

Once you hit 70,you can type on google for exemple if you are a DRG "FF14 DRG rotation 4.0",important to writte the 4.0 to have a guide that cover the DRG from old extension"

DPS checks refer to points in fights that require you to put out a certain amount of damage under a strict time limit to pass.
A good early example is the "infernal nail" in Ifrit's fights. If you don't destroy it in time, the party will wipe (everyone dies). This is the most basic DPS check.

Rotation refers to the sequence of skills you use in a fight. Specifically, some jobs have different ones at different levels. Using my black mage example from earlier, the "Flare" rotation is the best one you use at level 50, since it let's you use Flare, the most powerful spell a black mage has at that point, but a spell drain drains all MP, as often as possible.

I'd recommend looking up rotations for your DPS or tank of choice.
