Don't forget there is a maximum of slots on the enmity list of enemies.
If your not on the list you get no contribution.
You can check it if you are looking at your enmity bar.
It fills or you have an enmity order number? Gratz your on the enmity list and get contribution.
It doesn't fill or you have no enmity order number? Too bad, but you don't get contribution.

This phenomen can be seen by all huge bosses, like S-Hunts, Ixion or others of this type when a huge crowd of people try to kill it.

The enmity UI can suffer from desync, I've done S ranks with too many people where I never got any enmity and was considered out of combat the entire fight, but I still got rewards. Normally you don't get any rewards even if you're in a party if you don't contribute in any way, so the server is properly receiving my contribution information, but it can't send it back to the client properly and keeps me out of combat.

Depending on how much the FATE has scaled, even on a tank job you don't have the guarantee of getting full credit. I understand you wanna "play your way" and all, but this game has certain features that won't allow you to do so. It might be bad for you, but don't forget you're playing an MMO, not a single player game. You can do certain stuff alone, but others it's better if you group up with other people. This is one of those. If you really want to play alone and the way you want, bear in mind that there are certain content that you won't be able to complete.

the entire system is pretty lame for a solo player...telll me how i can tank ixion literally from 100%, to 0% and still get bronze? im literally contributing by tanking the thing and making sure everyone else survives.

I like to think about it as if it was a bar you fill. If you have several parties of several people, they are filling their party bars incredibly fast and they will most likely gold (Heals, DPS, tanks spamming aggro moves). If you don't, you'll fill that bar extremely slow. That's contribution. Party vs Solo. The party's contribution is counted as one, whereas solo does the same but it's only you. It's logical.

FATEs like that scale really high so your contribution, even if you tanked the whole thing, is nothing compared to what a full party or light party can do.

Really guys, is not that hard to ask for a party invite or create a party yourself. You'll see a lot of "inv pls" messages. Invite them, get stuff done, thank them for joining and disband.

Yep pretty much, it's the same issue with DOTs and stuff like that. Their "fix" to dots not showing up on bosses was to remove dots from half the classes and take away some from jobs that got to keep dots. I was pretty sad my first Ixion I did and got no credit since I just partied with my bf doing healing and me BLM doing top 5 dps on boss.

Just done an ixion fate and got no rewards due to not being in a party(at least i believe this to be the reason) and if that is indeed the case i think thats absolute crap.

So back to my title. Why?
I was there dpsing the entire time, didnt die, why the hell are we FORCED to join parties...

I can get solo gold on a-rank hunts except for when there are so many players also in on it. I can solo get gold on Odin. I've only managed to scrounge together silver solo on Ixion. Ixion is difficult to rank on by yourself. I was a little late to the FATE, but not sure how much being there earlier would have actually helped.

Well you asked "why" and you were answered. Whether it's a good system or not, well that's subjective.

Personally I find that even without asking for an invite there are usually PF up you can join without asking, or you can make one and incoming people will join it, so it's not really a big deal (and because of that I doubt the devs will spend the effort needed to fix something that can be so easily circumvented, regardless of whether it's good or not, especially when there isn't a general concensus that it's bad.)

Doing full tank enmity (or doing 1 hit as a healer and then going full heal spam) is one way to get full or near-full credit solo, though it's not guaranteed.
