    I was a pretty defensive tank, when I had first started. I remember I'd number every single monster, and I'd get all pissy if someone killed them out of order.
    That was three years ago!

    It took me learning that:

    1- Spreading DoTs is a (good) thing;
    2- AoEs exist;
    3- Not everyone likes having their hand held.

    Though, in retrospect, really anyone who followed my kill order was holding my hand. Looking back now, I don't know why I had issues holding aggro.

    ---

    In response to the OP, well... The friends I had were either bad players or they were afraid to be mean by telling me what I was doing wrong - so I had to learn from the unhappy parties I had when they'd get angry.
    In short, I wish my friends would have just told me earlier rather than thinking I was in blissful ignorance.

    Its been the same since the past until today for me.

    Constructive criticisms are most welcomed even though sometimes it may not come in a "nice" way.

    Destructive criticisms on the other hand such as 'gitgud' but with no details on what I messed up/did wrong/could do better will be ignored.

    agree with @PuppytimusLeoroccanz
    like iRL, I believe I take criticism well. I don't mind being criticized, I like to be told what I did wrong so I can do something about it. but I'm very argumentative when I know I'm right, esp when I have receipts :P you can't talk me down with trash talk, I've argued with a handful of difficult people in work and my personal circles in two languages, it doesn't shake me when I'm sure you're just being an ass.
    when going into dungeons for the first time I always let people know I'm new, and any advice is welcome. I apologize when I know I made a mistake, but I don't dwell on it nor do I argue back when a party member tells me what I should do. however, I do ask questions, because what others are telling me might be different from what I understand. I value communication in game as much as iRL.
    that said, if I know I'm having a bad day, I don't do roulette, I make sure to play with friends

    This....This right here. criticism can be helpful as long as it's said right. If s person says to me "Hey! I see you're doing this, it might be better if you do things like this instead" Then yes I'll be more willing to listen and try what the person is saying to see for myself if it is indeed better. If the persons criticism comes in the flavor of wall of insults,curses and "plz uninstall and kys", etc then their existence will be ignored.

    If the information comes up at the start of the group/raid that there are new people to the instance, the first thing I do is ask if anyone needs help with the boss tactics or stages in between.
    I'd much rather take the time to give preemptive help rather than reactive criticism.

    you can never improve if you dont know you need improving.

    If im doing badly and i dont realize i actually am doing badly, id prefer a friend to speak up and tell me i need to change something about what im doing, otherwise id keep doing exactly what is wrong, because i think its right.

    Obviously dont walk up to someone and say they are shit and should uninstall. I take criticism very well and encourage anyone to speak up about it

    When people criticize me I just say things like "I'm RPing as an ice mage" or "But I never run out of MP when I cast Blizzards." Then there is the old standby "You don't pay my sub." Then when they bring it up again I call them an elitist and threaten to call GMs for harassment.

    Seriously though, I don't typically get criticism but when I try to help people I usually get no response and the person continues doing whatever they were doing.

    I used to play on JP data center and i learned how to gid gud before I transferred so no one dares criticise me! /s
    Nah but I'll usually take most criticism to heart, even if people are being mean-spirited about it. I do get a bit annoyed when other people make basic mistakes so I can see where they're coming from and I'll usually try to practice and look online for more information on what I'm doing wrong.
    Of course there are times when I know the other person is full of crap so at that point I just get petty and decide to point out all of THEIR mistakes

    If I'm fortune enough to have someone constructively criticise something I'm doing wrong then preps to them, I'll thank them for it and attempt to improve for future means. Sometimes a sledgehammer is necessary to ensure people improve, or to drill it in their minds. So to speak

    But there's a very big distinction between constructively criticising someone with a 'sledgehammer' and someone just being spiteful, unhelpful and/or petty about it. The latter I feel most inclined to ignore and dismiss whatever they say on the matter until they're willing to be constructive about it. If someone is willing to confront or call someone out on an issue then they should either explain the matter briefly, or point to a relevant or recommended resource.

    I have always treated criticism as such, and will always remain to treat it in the same way. The only real example I can provide is when I was still relatively new I was running Aetherochemical Research Facility or Fractal, I never really used to spread DoTs on my Summoner, someone called me out on it and suggest I use Bane when necessary. Thanked them for it, got on with my business and following the experience I aimed to use it whenever it was appropriate. Or even earlier when I ran my first dungeon I was called out and told to stop using tank-type Pet. This scenario was me just being entirely new to any role based games, and practically a real MMO so was still coming to terms with everything and adjusting.
