"You have competition every day because you set such high standards for yourself that you have to go out every day and live up to that." - Michael Jordan
DPS checks are a thing in this game. That much is not up for debate.
This means that DPS will find themselves in situations where they will be called upon do push their gear, class, etc. to its limits in order to maximize their damage output.
Yet, we have no convenient method of determining, at that moment, just how good of a job we're doing on that front.
For tanks and healers, the question is easy to answer: if a tank is holding aggro and mitigating well enough that they live, they're doing fine (plus they can ask the healers if how hard they are to heal). If no one is dying, the healer is killing it.
But for a DPS, how we're doing from moment to moment is hazy at best, especially when we have no idea which other DPS are maximizing their damage and which aren't.
At the very least, let us have a personal parser that shows us and ONLY us our current DPS. It feels good to improve, and while tanks and healers can see themselves healing and holding aggro better, DPS don't have that same luxury with most boss situations (as we're never the only DPS there and have no idea how much we're personally contributing).
If you're afraid someone will ask you what your DPS is, you'd have the same option players do now: lie about it.
If the player insists you're not doing as much as you say, they're clearly using a 3rd party parser and could be reported for doing so.
But seriously, I just want to know how much damage I'm doing at THAT very moment, and a specialized instance where I can see how long it takes for me to kill something is no substitute because it doesn't factor into account the numerous mechanics to be found in a particular raid encounter.
The instance can tell you what you're capable of in a controlled environment you understand. It will tell you NOTHING of how much damage you're actually doing while learning the mechanics of a challenging new fight.
It could only help us improve as DPS players and it would be vastly more convenient than having to visit a specialized instance that exists entirely due to a lack of personal parsers.
PS. I feel like I need to point out (again) the fact that two of the three roles in this game, while having actual tools to gauge their effectiveness, can and DO frequently have those tools used against them.
Ergo, I don't understand why players so greatly fear toxicity when it's aimed at DPS players to the extent that they're concerned about DPS players even knowing their OWN numbers, yet they're apparently unconcerned with the fact that tanks and healers can (and often are) chewed out and kicked from groups for even one single screw up.
The mentality behind it being okay for tanks and healers to be held accountable for poor play but DPS must be shielded from even SELF scrutiny needs to DIAF.
Please just let me see my OWN DPS...
