    Crashing

Hi, so I just got back into ffxiv and was having a fine gameplay for the first 2 days I was playing. Next time I play the game starts crashing randomly. I'd have to reset my computer frequently, but have no idea what's making it crash. I'm not getting any error codes, because it turns off my monitor and have to manually reset the whole system. Can someone help me out here?

Good morning, and thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

What exactly happens when the game crashes? Does the entire screen turn black?

Did anything change on your computer that coincides with the crashing? Do you notice a pattern to it? Does it happen in certain areas of the game or during certain actions?

Finally, can you list the specifications for your PC?

We hope we can be of assistance in helping you enjoy the exciting world of Final Fantasy XIV!

What happens here? Is the game just completely locking up or is your screen going black? If either of these is true and it's causing you to restart your computer, then the very first thought that comes to mind is hardware instability. This may not be it, but in my many years of repair experience, it's a very common cause.

With that said, I would have you download two programs for testing this theory. The first would be Prime95. This is a CPU / processor stress test that will run your CPU at it's maximum capacity until you tell it to stop. I would download this and run it for 30 minutes to weed out any CPU instability. The second program I'd ask you to test with is called Furmark. This is a program that will run your GPU (graphics card) at it's maximum potential and will weed out any hardware issues aswell. I'd run this for 30 minutes to see if your GPU is outputting any type of errors.

Prime95 will stop if an error occurs. Furmark will crash or even restart your PC if it encounters an error.

Do this, and check back in with your results. In any instance of PC troubleshooting, there has to be a process of elimination. If a hardware fault comes to play within these tests, don't worry, as these are very easily remedied.

In the meantime, I'd like to know what CPU / motherboard / how much ram / and the graphics card you're running. If you do not know these and have a prebuilt computer, I'd like to know the make and model. I will check back later to see if you've tried these or posted.

EDIT: I'd also like to know what windows version you're running and the make and model of your power supply.

Also, running a modern CPU with more than 8 cores, whether it be physical or logical, seems to really mess up the game, as it was not designed for such. If this is the case, you would need to set the programs affinity to use only 8 cores or less.

    Thanks.

If you have a intel processor they had this thing about meltdown patch KB 4056894 or KB 4056892 were buggy on first release causing pc to crash.

Go check your updates and see if the update failed, then uninstall and re-install the patch if the patch failed.
Heard it has caused BSOD and other problems for people who it failed for.

That's the only thing I can think of besides going into your eventviewer and checking the error codes.
