    Unwritten rules thread

Figured I give a shot at this thread. I want to know some of the unwritten rules that you follow or have seen while in game. I'd love to hear your experiences. Who knows, maybe new players will see this too.

One of mines is when I'm tanking. I have a three strike rule (actually, I see a lot tanks doing this as well). I'll grab mobs that you pull twice during a run. Do it a third time, you will be tanking them until I'm done wth my current one. This does not include the ones I love aggro on, I'll pull those back unless I feel you're intentionally trying to take aggro.

I'll share some of my unwritten rules for FFXIV, not just from playing FFXIV, but from other mmos. Mostly pertains to me playing as dps, rather than healer.

    1. Try not to steal aggro (unless the tank is actually ok with you pulling and bringing mobs to them, and your team mates are happy with this as well, it can be helpful sometimes). Either when I'm playing dps and/or healer, I will follow the tanks lead in what mobs to attack (and to watch my aggro) I assign a hotkey to "Assist Target" for this.
    2. If you got utility skills that will help your teammates, please use them! On SAM I'll use Goad for whoever needs TP, for example.
    3. Stick close to the healer (unless you need to split for mechanics etc), just in case you need to stack for heals, buffs etc.
    4. Watch your teams speed and adjust accordingly, DON'T race on ahead, unless you wanna pull mobs and fold like a wet paper bag >.> Rule of thumb, use the tank's position as an invisible line you must never cross
    5. Lastly (probably could think of more though to be honest lol) communicate with your team... I'd say that's the most important unwritten rule.

My rules are more for myself but a little bit for others. If I don't hold myself to a certain standard, why should I expect it from others?

If I don't need an item or want to potentially glam it, I roll greed. If someone needs but is different role from gear and asks for it, I will pass. I miss out on rolls if I share role with another party member and the other one keeps needing everything, but I'd still rather be fair.

I give people the benefit of the doubt that they don't know rather than assume they are lazy or trolling. They may feel free to prove me wrong.

If, as a FC member calls it, they get the 'pokeball of death,' I warn other party/alliance members. I would wait enough time I think it would take to restart a router/pc, boot up the game, and log back in before considering a kick. If it is pvp and they were participating up to that point, I just let it be.

If someone is new, I will ask if they need explanations. It works better when I am tank, because sometimes I end up with a tank that expects me to explain things as he/she pulls.

If someone is harassing a party member, I would start a vote to kick. I can easily grab another tank or healer from my server. I have filled in before for people, also. If a FC member ever starts trouble, their status in the FC would be affected by either demotion or removal.

Any FC member participating in RMT faces removal and reporting.

I will never use rescue on anyone.

I don’t see how any of these are unwritten rules. They’re all things required for playing in group content and basic courtesies.

    Unwritten rules that I follow:

    1. Always play with more than 1 monitor. Alt+tab is a good way to miss things.
    2. Unless stated in party chat, tank is leader, a DPS who decides he can't wait and pulls is most likely a dead DPS.
    3. Be courteous when giving advice. "Git gud" is not advice.
    4. Having a DPS meter is ok. Using it to break rule #3 is not.
    5. Not liking a type of content doesn't make it "useless". People might be surprised that other people might enjoy that type of content.
    6. Don't call any role or job "easy". What's easy for one person is not necessarily easy for another, but that doesn't mean the other person shouldn't try. If they really try, they'll eventually get it, it will just take some time.

    My rules.

1: I do my job, no matter what.

When I first started tanking the FC that trained me wanted to make sure I was a good tank, going out of their way to give me hell. DPS pulling mobs, healers not healing till I was in the red, DPS doing single target combos in large group pulls, they put me through all of it. As a result most of the things that bother other players don't bother me at all. HP in the red? NP, my healers got me. DPS pulling? Let me just effortlessly pick those up for you. I, personally, find more joy in watching DPS struggle and fail to make my life hard over letting them die needlessly just cause they didn't do things my way. In fact I had one dungeon run where a random DPS openly said he was going to make my life hell. He tried, but nothing he did bothered me even one bit. Near the end he sprinted ahead and pulled like 9+ mobs onto himself, turned around and there I was, having sprinted as well. Throw cover on him, HG'ed, flash, CoS, Flash, and tanked everything like a pro. When we were done he said "Why, why couldn't you just let me die?", to which I replied "Because, it's my job.". Got three comms from that run.

    Other lesser rules.

2: Never stance dance unless it seems like the healers can handle it.

3: Need/greed only if I plan to use it, pass on everything else.

4: A left, B middle, C right, almost no one else will follow this so be skilled at changing on the fly.

5: Bring food, forget to use it most of the time. >.>

6: RNG numbers are a lie, how else can one fail an HQ mining 3 times in a row with a 96% chance. >.>

7: Reply nicely to any random tells. Yes that FC invite might have been a macro, but there is a human on the other end pressing the button.

    9: Rule 8 isn't always true.

10: Yes, there was no rule 8.

Don't drag your party members down.
    Don't be a jerk.
Know when to be firm but not a full on jerk about it.

    Don't be bad.

Glamour must always be on point.

Pull up your big girl pants, and go with the flow.

    Make your own fun.

If all else fails, just dance.

Just because something isn't your job doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. Able to help mitigate damage? Do more damage? Heal yourself? Do that. Your primary role comes first, but that ain't your ONLY job.

...but once their written they're no longer unwritten rules...

Hmm, I'll speak them into the mic here.

Got them? I'm not doing that again.
