Let's not double down on the standards discussion.
I feel like hating on this guy is more memetic than an actual legitimate thing.Never send anyone to MrHappy unless you can't stand their guts.
Never saw what the deal was with all the hate, and I actually find his guides to be the most comprehensive and helpful overall for the few bits of extreme-level stuff I have bothered to try when it was still relevant content. Many other guides I've seen for the same pieces of content aren't as thorough and tend to leave me feeling like there are potentially troublesome spots that the guide dismisses almost as an afterthought or doesn't even mention at all when I actually attempt the fights.
Yes, sometimes there are mechanics that are later discovered to have easier solutions for handling them, but that really happens to just about every guide-maker I've seen at some point or another so I don't think that's a fair criticism to use only against him and not anyone else.
People tend to be a bit overdramatic when it comes to him. Yeah sometimes his guides are longer than they need to be and yes he has, in the past given wrong information regarding boss mechanics (the only time i recall this happening is on Ozma) but most of the time his guides are perfectly fine and the irrational hatred directed at him is completely uncalled for. Like you said, it's pretty much become a meme at this point everytime his name is mentioned in the FFXIV community.
I think one of the primary dilemmas is that many people assume that if they are doing the mechanics (ergo, alive at the end of the fight or when the party wipes) then they aren't messing up or holding the group back. Either that or, like you're alluding to, they don't really care.
Personally, part of why I play games is to get better - be it better gear, role performance or whatever else. I'm not overly competitive, but I care about my performance. There are plenty of other reasons to play this game, but if you're in challenging content, I would assume you have a similar mindset. It amazes me how often I am completely wrong about that.
Going into extreme/savage fights to teach someone their dps rotation is not the proper place to do it. Even for any normal 8-man content. Shouldn't have to write out a rotation or look up the rotation for them during a fight. This should be done prior to going into any group content to prepare.
Shut your mooooooouth! If we were being hunted in the uh, woods for sport, and I was a baby bird, I'd crawl inside Mr. Happy's mouth so that he could draw nourishment from my corpse and defeat his enemies! So there!
I have to say I feel really lucky when I read posts like these. I have leveled all three tanks to 70, mostly through MSQ and duty finder, and I have not found such horrible people I see described here who will never listen to advice and will call you things just for trying to help.
I can see when someone is playing poorly, like everybody else I guess. Do I say something when I see it? Well, it depends: if it is a healer or dps I will say nothing at all since I lack the knowledge to even try to help. If it is the tank it depends: if they are doing it so bad that we might probably fail the duty then I try to help, and the key thing here is how you try to help.
First I ask: "[name], I have all 3 tanks lvl 70, I can give you some advice if you want ;-)"
Most of the times the answer is "Yes, please" because, you know what? They are struggling and they know it.
However if I went with my "advice" like this: "Oh my god, tank, agro is all over the place, get it together, use flash", most of the time the answer would be something along the lines of "f... you" because, let's be honest, I would only be helping to get the guy more anxious than he probably is alreday, and that does not help.
The thing is, I have seen the second version of the "help" much more often than the first one, so maybe the problem is not so much that people don't want to learn how to play, but that some other people need to learn how to properly lay a helping hand in the first place.
And that's my two cents on the topic. Happy new year!!
