I miss Uematsu. No other game soundtrack has been quite as memorable/immersive since.
To be fair to Soken, he does a damn good job with the shear amount of music he churns out.

I used to think that about XI before XII came out. Then XII's combat proceeded to remind me of everything I disliked about XI's combat (and threw in a bunch of other factors I couldn't stand). Eventually XIV came out, and I finally changed my mind about XI, though I don't see myself ever going back there. I haven't died and lost THAT experience.

People have been arguing this since FFXI was first launched and as others have stated already, it's not true. Mostly it is just sour grapes by certain FF fans who don't want to pay a subscription for them (the old "why should I pay to play a game I've already paid for?" claim) and who thus can't then boast "I've played every FF game!" for geek cred. Luckily with FFXIV's rebirth as ARR and it's unprecedented success though these claims have been mostly subsiding, but you still get some stubborn people still sticking to that arguement.

It's best to just ignore them, you know better than them and that's what's important.

Much of FFXIV's OST is Nobuo Uematsu's work though (the theme songs Answers, Dragonsong and Revolutions are his work for one). He was the original composer for FFXIV 1.0, and most of that has returned for ARR, with Masayoshi Soken officially 'Sound Producer' and composer as well.

Uematsu has also been composing new tracks for FFXIV's expansions, so he still definitely is involved in the series.). Also most of FFX's OST was Masashi Hamauzu's work (who also was later FFXIII's composer as well). Before FFXIV 1.0 the last soundtrack Uematsu exclusively worked on was FFIX's OST. But I digress.

I typically get the opinion but it's not one that's exclusive to final fantasy as such. the same can be said for many games out there because they change far to much and become almost total alien to the original concept.

Take a look at resident evil. there's one I grew up with. 1 -4 quite survivalish loads puzzles and tension and stuff. then 5- 6 and onwards etc it's essentially resident call of duty it's not really a survival horror anymore it's just another run and gun action blaster.

other franchises are much the same the newer hitman games for example are nothing like the excellence of the old. the idea of silent assiasin no witnesses is almost non existant. in many of the newer games even made more apparent with the limited options available in some of the newer games.

final fantasy is kind of the same for me the biggest difference between 11 and 14 for example is the world. vanadiel was dangerous it was alive. it was worth protecting. eorzea really lacks that. its not dangerous its not alive. and you spend to much of your time in instances to actually feel connected to the world itself.

someone earlier said ff was enver the same after 10 and in some ways I kinda agree. 10 you never really felt you were out there in the world just kind of heavily on rails as to where you could go and what you could do. and many of the following ones kinda followed suit. 13 was linear as hell for example and it kinda removes a huge element that is what makes ff what it is to many. you just feel disconnected from the world around you.

Its the same with so many games out there. these days. To many ffxiv is nothing more than a glorified wow with the ff brand tacked on. because it lascks so much of that ff essence. if you took away the final fantasy title. it wouldn't be anywhere near as popular. just another wow clone.. because when you look at it. that's basically what it is. it has more similiarities to wow than it does to a FF

It's funny you say that because I always thought the way RE6 ended up was the natural evolution of the series lol.
You can see it as early as RE2, the intro and everything after the police station is just action setpiece after action setpiece, you fight tons of monsters and stuff, then RE3 upped that even more with the Nemesis encounters all throughout the game and RE4 pretty much defined the third person shooter genre at the time, the series got more action packed a less focused on survival with each new entry.

As for the OP, just ignore your friend, most people who have that opinion just dismiss any MMO because they think it's just grinding and stuff with no substance, plus they probably hate human interaction lul.
Hell I'd say FFXIV is the most "Final Fantasy" entry in the series since IX or X.

Final fantasy's XI and XIV are considered part of the main series as they are holding the numeric value.

I.e Final fantasy I to Final Fantasy XV are the main series.

spin-offs dont connect to the numeric structure. I.e World of final fantasy, Dissidia Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy Crystal Cronicles

the grey area is what is considered is the sequel games, which are considered spin-offs by some but are of a main number title I.E Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy XIII-Lightning returns. Final Fantasy XV- a Kings tale

Both games are featured in other titles (Final Fantasy Theaterhythm, Dissidia 1 and 2, knock off mobile games, etc.), both games are presented chronologically in any official books that Square publish, and they’re given their respects in any media that Square has created (Distant Worlds comes to mind). I’m unsure how they’re not considered a Final Fantasy game.

FF purists think the mmo's dont count because they are nothing like the older games. But they also get this way with the newer FF's. There just is no pleasing some people.

Eh... there's a few games I can name off the top of my head that for me are more memorable than anything prior to 10... some not even inclusive to the Final Fantasy franchise.
