Now if you want the real kicker, go with a tank that's in Ironworks. Enjoy that.
To be honest in SB I think you can't just level through dungeons using the gear you get along the way.
For example HQ level 68 gear is surprisingly stronger than the gear you get from Doma Castle (like pretty much the same level as Genta to Genji equipment) so you'll probably need to shell out some gil if you want your runs to go as smoothly as possible.

Not really. Doma Castle gear is plenty to get smooth runs in Castrum Abania. You don't need to buy HQ 68 gear. NQ 68 gear off the vendor gets the job done better than Shire does.

Of course it's stronger than the ilevel 67 doma gear, because it's ilevel 68 But you don't need it for Castrum Abania.
If you hit level 67 and unlock Doma Castle and level through til level 69, there is a high chance to enter CA with all gear of Doma Castle (if lucky even with the weapon). Doma Castle gear is sufficient for Castrum Albania and after 2-3 runs with exp bonus you'll hit 70 and get your left sided 290 job gear. There is no need to spend money for crafted gear (if you got the HQ gear through quests, then you can upgrade missing parts like the weapon).

Oh my god, I just keep thinking of the Sirensong runs I had.

    The ilvl 200 player

The friend of that player who thinks just cause he's equpped with a 255 while the rest of the gear is even below

The dps who are in full 230 but want to save their lore for "something else"

The healer who tells me he doesn't need shire cuz if I'm a good tank, I'll live

The tank who wants to save his money for glam

    Oh god

    Oh god why

    Why

    Whyyyyy

    And Bardam...ugh..just...ugh.

There's a reason I rarely stepped foot in Doma and beyond to lvl some jobs.

I had a situation a few days ago. Went in to Doma Castle as AST, I was geared up on Omega stuff so no issues on my end, and the DPS although one was new they both had decent gear. The PLD however came in with Augment Shire gear on the left side and a mix of 250-260 on the right. From the moment of the first pull the tank was squishy as hell and I literally had to spend every turn popping heals. They did a couple of big pulls and on each occasion we eventually wiped because the tank was so undergeared and taking bigger hits that could of been avoided.

Eventually i asked them why they were still using shire stuff and they just said they were being lezy leveling up. It kinda annoyed me more because this player was a Mentor, ok that doesn't mean much on most players but you'd think they would have some common sense when it comes to gear. After the 4 wipe the tank says it wasn't their fault and left the duty, we got a lovely (savage geared) replacement and we then had no problems from there on.

Having an ilvl requirement would be nice for some dungeons but it's more personal preference than anything. I'd try to gear up over time so I'd expect others to do it too.

Even if they don't want to set a lockout for undergeared players, a *recommended* ilevel would be helpful, and/or perhaps a reminder similar to the one you get when your gear needs mending.

Certainly in ARR, the vendors seem badly arranged to me. You can't see at a glance if there is new gear that is worth buying for your character - you have to scroll through the list, look for ones that have better stats, see whether you are actually able to equip them (eg. level restrictions, DPS and tank gear mixed in together)....

Just grouping the gear by class-type would be better than the actual system of grouping by level - have categories for tank armour, medium armour (tanks + lancer), DPS, mages, and separate crafting and gathering. Then you'd just need to go to the correct category for the class you're equipping, and everything you could ever buy for that class would be there in the one list and sequenced by level, not split up across multiple menus and mixed with things you can't use.

(Also: the Recommended Gear button in the Character menu needs to stop suggesting non-tank armour for tanks. Usually it's slightly-higher-level-but-much-lower-defence DPS gear, but it actually recommended mage equipment for me the other day.... a sign that I need to buy new tank armour, sure, but still something is amiss with their system of judging what is actually the best equipment.)

Even that test seems to be not working as intended. I was still wearing my level-1 blouse and they let me through that check. Possibly had Lv8 gear in other slots and they just check an average number, but still. (And I continued wearing it right up until I got the Novice gear at Lv15 because I liked it and didn't seem to be having trouble beating enemies....)

Honestly once I get to lvl 67. I stopped doing leveling roulette on my tanks. Simply because the amount of undergeared players made going into that a nightmare.

Its really noticeable in the lvl 68 and 58 dungeons. The lvl 60 and 70 dungeons( including story) have Ilvl restrictions which makes it ok.
