My point was it is fine for F2P games to have a cash shop, because they need to earn money from somewhere. However, FFXIV isn't a F2P game (even though it is easy to forget due to the very tiny amount of content released and its low quality these days). You still need to invest quite a bit of time into League to get all champions you want/need, however.
And they make a lot of ruckus about the extra skins via promotions. I recall the PROJECT and Star guardian skins with their fancy (and admittingly well designed) trailers and login screens, basically throwing you their release in your face: "They are out, come get them! You know you want those."
Needless to say, they did cost quite a bit as well to acquire them, with Ezreal's Pulsefire skin alone being about 25$/20€.
Doesn't matter. Blizzard and Valve showed the gaming industry about 7 or so years ago that people still want to cash in their money on vanity objects despite them having paid for a game and running a subscription.
The Celestial Steed from World of Warcraft alone gave them a revenue of 3.5 million dollar on release, with a queue of 140.000 players waiting in the shops to get their turn to buy it.
And you can already guess how good it went also with Team Fortress 2 and their hats, emotes and exclusives, some of them still being worth thousands of dollars.
That was enough for the industry to turn their heads and fully apply those 'services' into their games as well, F2P or not.
I mean yeah but early on in the game there was actual demand from the community itself for a cash shop so it's not like it's a greedy plan thought up by them. I'm fine with it as long as the money goes towards more development, I mean if people are patient they do go on sale. My only complaint with premium items is that I wish things like mounts would have custom themes and kind of expect that for the price.Doesn't matter.
