After thinking about it a bit, I've come to a realization that the main reason people are upset might be because this is being locked behind the Mogstation, with no way to get it aside from paying real money for it. AND that this would be fine were this not a subscription-based game. We pay 12-15 bucks every month and still they ask us for more money.

And then it hit me - what if they made it so that every 3 months you are subscribed to the game, you are rewarded with a couple of points which you can use to obtain items inside the Mogstation? So the Carbuncle mount for example could be obtained after being subscribed for 6 months. I think this would definitely go a long way to calm people who are unhappy with this system.

Alot of F2P mmorpg already do this, you earn cash shop points every week/month, but I dont think SE will do this. They know that people are willing to buy it, so why give the players the option to get the item for free? Its the same with retainers, before Stormblood when people were in need for more inventory, SE could have given us a free retainer, but they knew that people wanted more inventory space and are willing to rent the retainers.

I mean think about this, SE knew that there was a need and they had the solution, but instead they have decided to monetize on the needs of the players.

As for me, I wont be buying it right now, maybe when there is a sale, but I do have to agree with some of the players that both the Carbuncle outfit and mount could have been part of some content. Maybe something like relics, takes a long time to finish, but the reward is worth it?

This suggestion (or rather: the lack of doing something like this) is one of the reasons I'm a bit salty about this. Or rather used to be salty about it, by now I just dont give a damn anymore and just try to ignore all the mogstation-items alltogether.
Because the thing is: They've got a system like that in place when they removed the veteran-rewards. Exchanging your achievment-points for tokens that you can use to buy old vet-rewards. A system that is completly useless for any loyal customer who has been paying those 4 years.
They also got this new system in place for rewarding subscribers - the system that got us the Falcon-mount (a mount, that was so badly designed with clipping and other issues that they had to fix it) in autum. And since then we've never heard of a new campaign like that again.
They could also add it to long-term achievments like 10.000 dungeon-runs.
    Or to Khloes WT-book.
Or the GS - even though, granted, we got some new rewards, including a mount, there recently.

The thing is: This game desperatly needs more content. They cut back on the dungeons we're getting - from 3 to 2 and now to one single dungeon. The last patch wasnt rich on content either and its been month since then. I love this game. And I like playing it - yet, I find myself logging in with nothing to do, because I've finished more or less everything I'd like to do. Stuff like the Carbuncle Mounts, but also the gear could have been a new incentive to play the game and work towards something.
And I would honestly be fine if they'd also put it on the mogstation so that people who'd rather not run 10.000 dungeons can get it right now, but those who'd prefer to work towards it, can do the same and have a reason to continue to pay their sub.

I am well aware that we're actually getting quite a bit content like that aswell - christmas event gave a new mount, sqaudron-missions can earn you 4 emotes, 2 more emotes can be bought for GC-seals. Its not as if we're not getting any content at all, thats true. But we are getting less and less content - and we're hearing excuses about several things (male bunny ears, for example), claiming that they dont have the ressources to do those. Yet it seems very weird to me that they're so short on money with all the coin this game should bring in from subs alone that they have to stuff their cash shop with items designed for the cash shop.

Giving us a way of earning those items in game - even if its a grindy one - would defintly soften the blow here and they'd probably still make a lot of money from people who'd rather not grind their way towards those mounts/gear/emote.
