Actually, it's mostly to mask other players using the elevator- so that nobody else has to wait for the elevator to go up/down before they can use it. Technically the polys for the upper/lower level need to start being drawn but this only takes an instant. If you go to the airship landing, the loading doesn't take place until after the elevator animation finishes.

A cutscene skip is more than sufficient. However, if it crashes you, then that's something that needs to be fixed and should be posted in a bug report.

The CS crashes happen to everyone if you haven't had one happen to you then your one of the very few. I believe it is a problem with how the game is coded and will probly be fixed in 2.0 but until then we need some kind of temp fix.

It if was as common as you claim it to be, people would have made threads complaining about it months ago.
