I am reasonably sure these have been around since before squadrons were?

Yeah they were around before the squadrons. I remember my retainer bringing one back and was like wtf is this thing and asked in the NN what it actually did. But saying this, if it was around before squadrons then it must of had use on actual party members or it would of been useless surely. My squadron rarely dies but if they do then everyone does and it just respawns at the start of the duty meaning I barely get chance to use the tonic anyway.

There are two items with similar namings and the same item icon. The company issued tonic (I think it’s expectorant or something, not tonic) which has been around since before squadrons that (maybe) works like a Phoenix down and cannot be stacked and the high grade one that became available much later, only works on squadrons and can be stacked.
