It is only optional if you never want to buy a house or have GC Squadrons. Both of those require GC Second Lieutenant rank, which requires completion of the Aurum Vale and the GC hunt log which contains marks in Aurum Vale.
I agree it's nothing special to look at in terms of design beyond ooh look cave with puke green puddles lol, DD is just a dark cave with nothing to visually look at, Toto Rak belongs in there as well, but far worse do to the level and poison/webs/slow goo.I don't think it's about the mechanics alone that makes it a undesirable dungeon to do. I think it's, like Dzemael Darkhold, one of the more uninspired dungeons and very plain when it comes to design : Cramped, plain looking tunnels, lots of hazardous spots that are just a nuisance instead of a challenge and the slight feeling that the dungeon have been slapped together on the fly.
One person's ugly art is another person's beautiful art. Perspectives will not always be the same, I like Aurum vale a lot actually.
Aurum vale can still put people in their place, but I think that's perfectly fine. Coincounter has to have the most kills of any dungeon boss. He and Gorgimera probably get drinks together in their off time.
And here I am wishing for a "Minstrel's Ballad: Aurum Vale". It would be a great way to introduce extreme dungeons.
Honestly I understand why the dungeon has a reputation of being hard to new players. Newbies may not be familiar with morbols just yet (or monster families sharing abilities), two of the bosses have a constant healing requirement, the middle boss does not have telegraphed attacks, the first room is the first time tanks are required to plan their pulling and the last boss requires adds to be killed in time if you don't want trouble.
But all of this should be basic knowledge to players who have done every dungeon up to level 70. It does not need fixing, because it's meant to teach you all the skills it requires of you.
The only difficulty is players that don't bother to read chat and don't understand the boss mechanics.
First room is a good challenge to teach players that they have limits.
The developer already say "No, actually we gonna make the next set of Job Exclusive emote and achievement" *Complete 200 The Aurum Vale syc*
