If we could easily mail to our alts, then why would we pay for retainer services?

Although I think that it was once answered as to why we cannot have access to mail our alt characters, even though it was possible by using the dungeon exploit mentioned previously, I think this quote above explains exactly why it isn't a feature and why it never will be.

It doesn't affect me though, I have my own Company full of my alts, I use the guild bank to transfer items and large sums of Gil, I don't need to pay for more retainers as i have 16 for free this way.

I believe not many people use paid retainers (can't find the quote, sorry) so, I'm not sure this is purely a cash grab. It might simply be their vision for the game is single character, which sucks if you like your alts or RP. I have two alt characters I play regularly and an extra paid retainer. The assumption people would go back to two retainers if the allowed us to mail alts might not be true. I've no intention of ditching mine, they're too useful.

We already pay extra for our alt characters and not being able to mail them or share houses with them is a major pain. As it is, the more expensive sub that lets you have alts doesn't offer great value for money.

If they were really concerned with people ditching retainers, then they probably would never have released any form of glamor catalogue system. The one being released is a free 200 slots for glamor which could cause people to drop a retainer. They are releasing one though, so that tells me they're not worried about people dropping retainers. It's like you said and how I feel too, they invisioned this game to be a single character game. To save on server space, housing and everything inbetween. The armory system is enough to show this to me. Though it could also be in part they just don't want to go through each and everyone of the games items and recode them all and sort them into groups of what can be mailed and what can't be mailed and what parameters are needed to flag each item for mailing or not able to mail.

In which case they could have restricted people to one character from the start or grandfathered in legacy players and restricted you to one character when ARR launched and if anyone asked for alts, they could just told people that it's their vision for people to only have one character (and please buy fantasia).

They didn't. In fact, the one-character per server subscription isn't even called the "standard" subscription, but the entry subscription. As such, I doubt it's what they envision.
It took them years to add Frontline Freelancer because they were afraid of "Moral Degradation". I'd not be surprised if they genuinely believe the mail restriction to be a pure anti-RMT measure. Our devs have veeery strange reasoning at times. Unless they gain money from restricting alts somehow, I doubt they feel strongly about it one way or the other.

They do gain money from restricting alts. Because if people want extra storage space, the only way to do it now is to pay monthly for more retainers.
