My suggestion is the “Forgotten Recipe”. Player collect books of crafting recipes from old civilization such a magi, andapor, nym, old other, etc…Those books are missing pages and have pages with recipes for which all the ingredients or quantity are not all readable.**
The idea is recipe need the crafter to guess the missing ingredient or missing quantity to realize it. Crafter can find clues but not the solution by running a dungeon. In addition, all those recipes would need an item from gatherer (item appear sometime when gathering to be collected as one item at a time) or dungeon runs as random drop occasionally. An old item not used in current recipes and not part of the normal gathering. Those items needed cannot be sold on the market board but can be trade on a trading market.**
The trading market will exchange those old items one for one. Like that if I found only old item for another recipe, but someone as them and need mine, we can trade them without being logged at the same time. That trading market could be a great add-on to the game and extended some other items, like gears from old expansion dungeon/raids . A trader NPC allow me to offer a trade for my item against another one, and someone can make the trade. When the trade is done, I can go and talk to that NPC to receive my part of the trade.*
However, to make the game of resolving the recipe interesting, the game must generate the missing item(s) or quantity(ies) randomly for the player when the player receive the book. Like that for the same crafting recipe, I can have a missing quantity of 4 for an ingredient, when another player will have a quantity of 3, or will know it need 3 of an ingredient it will have to find. Like that if a player finds its recipe, it cannot help another player by giving the answer to him on what is missing. The final item crafted is the same for all player, but not the ingredients and quantity to make each player searching for its recipe.*
The recompense of that “forgotten recipe” is the crafted item itself, could be a glamour gear, an item for houses, a minion, ….*
The missing pages are for adding new recipes with patches. Some recipe can be simple with only the need of finding the missing quantity or ingredient, some more complex where you have to solve that missing ingredient for two or three sub-crafting that will be needed to craft the final receipt. And to solve the puzzle, players can choose to try options, or go find clues to reduce their research.*
Note about the gatherer item, instead of a random item appearing randomly during normal gathering, it could be items to gather in dungeon or dangerous places that you run as miner, fisher or botanist escorted by your squadron to protect you during the gathering could be a nice add-on to squadron and gatherer.*
Hope crafter (and gatherer) of Eorzea will like that idea.*
