    I understand that my job as OT is to pick up the adds. But what about when there are no adds? Am I then essentially DPS? Should I switch into Sword Oath to maximize the damage? Is there any benefit to having me remaining in Shield Oath so I can at least be second on the enmity list?
    It would really depend on the type of battle.

    Example;

    If there are phases were adds pop yes you need to change stance and get them.

    If there are debuffs or tank buster moves were you need to swap with tank as main you have to be ready. (Exdeath for example)

    There are certain moves or actions that only OT can handle. Such as certain meteor spots were OT can only survive.

    As a PLD, I sometimes help heal healers who are in low hp or cover MT if I feel it is 100% necessary. Specially those who don't know about Shirk and how it works when swapping.

    OT is not bad you just have to know when and how to react to certain situations. Now if you completely out DMG the main tank and take enmity from it without even trying call it out. Communication can help sometimes.
