Holy wall of text, I would be ok with the way FF11 did maps as long as we don't get retarded quests like the Crawlers Nest map.I think SE should do what they did in FFXI. Meaning we buy the maps as well as some being quest related map. I found that either buying the maps or questing for maps was in its self rewarding. Now to black out the maps as we walk thru the zones I would have to disagree with anything like that. Now to leave the map blank thats fine till you either buy the map or quest for it. I would love a book to hold all the receipts we make and or can unlock. Now ill go even furthure and say with the new jobs of whm and blm, SE needs to take away the animas and give the whm teleport spells as well as blm's having their warp, and warp 2 spells. Also sneak and invis would be a nice addition as well for mages to have. Part of what made FFXI fun to explore was not knowing and you are running thru a zone w sneak/invis up. In ffxiv there is no sense of danger. Exploration in FFXIV is either walk past certain mobs or depending on the area you are in you either get lucky as some spots are full of monsters that are sight only so walking and such dosent help, it is just by luck that you may or may not get by certain monsters in certain zones. For those of you that will say it can be done, I say im sure it can if and only if the monsters are in a placement (sight aggro only) that you can get thru. I have gotten all crystals (thats what I call them) in all but 2 zones.
I don't agree with taking away anima and having WHM be a general teleportation dogs body again.

I'd love maps that get filled in as we explore. Someone brought up the FF4DS thing and I think that it would be neat to get achievements or item rewards for doing so. Simply buying maps is really boring.
As someone mentioned, a crafting recipe book and gathering book/log were already in the works.
I see nothing wrong with buying maps, this way those who don't want to explore get their full maps and those who want can explore. Personally I prefer exploring them myself, but if they force us to do so, I can imagine lots of QQing... actually nvm, i forgot these are official forums.

I'm all for buying maps as well. I'm just against having every single map readily available to you.

The thing about buying maps is that it's mostly pointless if they work the way they do now. Especially after 2.0 everyone would theoretically just pay 10k gil or whatever to a NPC and it would just return to the same way it is now. It would be better to cut out the middleman and have everyone start out with maps again. There has to be an actual point to it, like instead of buying the map themselves you buy maps for hidden areas or other such things.

hmm, it's all good but
- hopefully the last 0.1% of map won't be stuck in between wood/lake/ocean that must be walking with special method in order to get it... such in the middle of the Fallgourd Lake or corner of The Mirror(somewhere in The Black Shroud)
- I guess there is a fine difference between "I've been to Lichenweed" and "I've been to every inch of Lichenweed"
- I still like the real world idea, once you get the map, it shows you everything, on surface.
- maybe it should be an optional thing call my traveler map...
