You are correct. I'd never tried to use an airship before having a highest level or 27 or so and wasn't aware of this at all (just as I'm sure many who quote 5k as the price never tried before they had a level 50), thank you for pointing out my error. I hate misinformation provided by myself as much as by any other. Still, 2500 gil is significantly cheaper than 5k when you're starting out, so I imagine this is useful info for newbies.
Airships do cost 100 * your highest level (unless your highest level is below 25, in which case you have to pay exactly 2500 gil to ride). Much better ^_^
Generally, your first weapons will be "Weathered", weak and untradable but cheap. Other players can't sell you these items, but they're common pieces of level 1 gear that are easily obtainable from either NPC shop owners or leves. Keep in mind that basic works. You came into the world with some gear, let it carry you through your first few levels and don't get rid of it too soon as you probably will need it again for levelling other jobs.
When it is time to get gear, do some research on external sites. Find out what you can use at your level (you must be at least the required level for some things and should be within a couple of levels of optimal levels in other things) and find out where you can get it for free or how it is made. Shposhae for example has a lot of low level (about level 15-25) gear. It might be hard to solo at those levels, especially with lower level gear, but see if you can make friends who feel like doing a dungeon run there as a break from leves and grinding and boss battles. People will, by and large, overcharge in the markets so it's much better if you can get your own gear.
Also, levelling gathering and crafting skills at the same time will save you a lot of money. You're a DoW? Mine for ores, turn them into usable metal bars, make yourself a nice sword or spear or helm. All that that will really cost you is a little time and effort, and in the end you'll likely want to have those jobs levelled up anyhow. If you can't make something yourself, try getting the materials together and asking a friend.
Essentially, the game is soloable, but you'll get everywhere much faster with some good friends or in a linkshell. Just be courteous and open to suggestions from others and they'll be happy to play with you again ^_^
Edit: Just fixed a little mistake.
