    Just re-subbed, need job advice

Finally re-subbed and decided to just re-roll (since my old character was only a 18 CON from launch). Decided I want to play as a tank, so I figured GLD would the usual choice shield I like the sword and shield play style. However, after poking around on here, it looks like MRD also makes a solid tank for AoE. Either way it seems that I will need to level both, along with a little bit of PUG and a couple levels of CON as well. Am I on the right track for tanking? Solo play will also be important since right now the pop's are low and it's hard to find people to group with at lower levels.

I figured black/armorsmithing would be my crafts of choice.

Any other recommendations to get me started would be greatly appreciated.

Another thought. Would it be better to start as GLD or MRD to work towards tanking?

Either is fine if you want to tank. The class actions got a major overhaul and the Combo system has been added. Now you should be fine doing your particular role in a group without needing to level almost every other class to high levels like before, although it still makes you a lot better in groups. Most classes now give their most useful cross-class abilities before level 20. In your abilities menu you can actually look at all the abilities each class learns ahead of time so you can see what you'd like to aim for.

As far as GLA vs MRD, GLA is the more defense-oriented of the two. You should be able to solo without issue after practicing combos. It's much easier to gain and keep hate at the cost of you not being able to do as much damage as other classes, although your are able to use combos to help your damage and put Defense down and a DoT on the enemy.

MRD is able to swap between being in an offense or defense stance and is able to tank really well. It can take hits nicely but not as good as a GLA, and it takes more effort/time to get up to the same level of enmity. The upside is that you will more easily slip into a DD role as a MRD if you aren't required to tank.

Since you'd need to get both of them up to 14 for their enmity abilities, it should give you enough time to get a little taste at how they both play.

Thanks! Great advice. I'll probably move my toon back to Wutai since that's where all my money is. Give me a change play MRD a bit.

By the way, is there still no way to transfer money and items between 2 characters?

There are still no mailboxes. Only way is to do it by using a friend or 2nd account.

Bah, that sucks. I thought retainers were shared, but looks like I was mistaken on that.

If you want to give gil to another character....

Put something like Marmot meat up for sale for however many gil you want to transfer on the new character, then change to the old character and buy it.

    Item-wise I don't think there's much you can do.

Yeah I think I'm just gonna use my old toon. At least then I already have some crafts and levels to work with.

If you go this route, try to use an item that belongs in the ward that your retainer is in. You'll be paying ward taxes on this, and you'll want it to be as little as possible.
